Windows Update laptop issue

(Edited by JohnBF on 21-Nov-06 12:38. )
1. Can anyone confirm that this is the site, and it seems to be unresponsive? http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/...t.aspx?ln=en-us
2. Does anyone using a laptop and Wifi connection have trouble completing the downloads? My laptop usually times out after 15 minutes, and I had a 72% downloaded update that has disappered from systray, and has never asked me for permission to install it. My latest updates are October 16. FWIW I'm using IE7. I think it's related to the abended download that this machine now won't complete a full shutdown.

Edit: OK, the Update website is fine on the Bride's machine. Must be IE7 reload time on the laptop.

Re: Windows Update laptop issue

More information, please!

1. Try to connect to Windows Update from Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add New Programs > Windows Update
2. Can you connect to Microsoft Update website? If yes, click "Custom" button. If no, try to add *.microsoft.com to Trusted sites:

- on Internet Explorer, from Tools menu select Internet Options,
- on Internet Options window, click Security tab, then select Trusted Sites in Zones box and click Sites button,
- uncheck "Require server verification..." checkbox and add following sites one by one:

http://*.update.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

- click close, OK, and close Internet Explorer.

3. When Windows Update determines which updates must be installed, click Install. If some updates failed to download or to install, please post their numbers (names). In cause of any difficulties, refer to How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues

Re: Windows Update laptop issue

The problem has resolved itself - yesterday the "New updates have been downloaded, do you want to install now" dialog appeared after a bootup on the laptop (after not being visible for about 5 hours laptop use), I installed, rebooted twice upon request, and all is well. I'm now able to access the MS Update site via IE7, and the machine is closing down properly.

In any case, kaplinb, thank you for your advice. I didn't know that the MS Update link was also embedded in the Control Panel, I tried it after the update process and it's alive, and for future reference I added the MS Update websites to the trusted list in IE. I'll research the Windows Update problems site later.

I'm still not happy that the update download (yellow shield) icon seems to disappear from the systray, even after clicking the "Show hidden icons" button, I think it has to do with interrupted Wifi downloads, but things seem to be working.
