    repeated updates (XP Home SP2)

Lately my computer lets me know that an update is pending. When I open up the download window it wants to install KB923980 which, I believe, is the SP2 update. I installed it long ago. Any suggestions on how to get it to stop trying to have me install it every time I boot?

KB923980 is one of the November 2006 updates. Perhaps it didn't get installed correctly? Go to Windows Update and "Review your update history".

Not sure there is a definitive answer but have a look at KB 923980 wants to be installed ever and ever again ? - Windows Update.

Visit Security Update for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB923980), download the update, save it to your hard drive and install from saved file. I had no problem to install this update.

Re: repeated updates (XP Home SP2)

I've tried everything. I downloaded the update from the windows update site, saved it and ran it. It installed successfully. However, auto update still thinks it isn't installed every time I boot. I went to windows update and clicked on the "review installed updates" and it indicates that the update is installed. I go to Install/uninstall in the Control Panel and it shows the update installed. So I uninstalled it and let the auto update install it all over again. Nothing chanes!! It still wants to install the update every time I boot. I'm about at the end of my rope with this. I think there must be something in the registry or somewhere that indicates that it isn't installed.

Re: repeated updates (XP Home SP2)

The only thing I can suggest - install the downloaded update and restart your computer. Then click Start > All Programs > Windows Update (on the top part of the list) or Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add New Programs > Windows Update. When Windows Update website shows up, click Custom button, wait for the list of updates to be installed, and check "Do not show this update again" checkbox under KB323980 Update.

    Good luck!
