    Track Changes (2003)

A colleague is experiencing problems with tracked changes. The issue is:

When amendments are made to the document e.g. wording of a paragraph, then the paragraph is moved to another part of the document, the tracking now only shows that the paragraph has moved, and not that there are changes in wording in the paragraph. Is there any way of showing both. It

When I try this (Word 2003 SP2), I do see the original amendments - see screenshot below.

    Thanks Hans

I can't tell exactly what order that you've made your changes in and you obviously have the 'balloons' turned off - unlike my colleague.

    What happens with be is:
I insert 'and ' between 'yours' and 'or' - it's underlined.
    I cut that line - I get a strikethrough
I paste it - the whole thing is underlined
I delete 'or' in the new line - it just goes - no underline

Hmm, I can't reproduce my previous result now.

Further experimenting leaves me to beleive that track changes records cumulative changes by a user: if you insert a word, then later delete it, the word will disappear without a trace. To have different layers of tracked changes, you must change the username (in Tools | Options..., User Information). But that quickly becomes tedious. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    Re: Track Changes (2003)

If you make changes to existing text with track changes on it shows all deletions & insertions. If another user makes changes to your changes, it also shows that. But if you cut & paste the text with track changes on, it shows total deletion where it was & a brand new insertion where you put it (when you move it, treated as new text) .

If you paste the text with track changes OFF, it should appear as it did in the original location. At least that's what we've found. So you cut with track changes ON, then paste with track changes OFF. Hope this helps.
