Start Menu Attributes (XP MCE SP2)

Yesterday I installed the latest edition of Intuit's TurboTax and, since I like to have the previous year onboard also, I dug out last year's copy and installed both. When I do tax, I usually hotkey back and forth for comparison.

Anyone know how the install process managed to do this "color" job on the two new entries? I checked all the desktop.ini files I could find in the Start Menu chain and don't see anything. The shortcuts themselves look like ordinary shortcuts. It's curious that the background color is only in the two entries...

    Al

My system always shades new entries in that way. It also balloon alerts me that new programs have been installed, when I mouse to Start > All Programs. Does the shading disappear after you've used the Start menu shortcuts?

Aha, says he with a <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> as the question is answered! I had made my test runs from the icons that were put on the desktop, rather than the Start Menu. Sure enuf, the color disappears after running for the first time, so there must be some code in the registry trick that they do. I don't remember seeing any balloon notices, but that may be something I have turned off somewhere.

    Thanks Alan!

    Al,

    I think you'll find this if you right click Start>Properties>Start Menu tab>Customize button>Advanced tab>Start Menu Settings. HTH <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
