    Ref field formatting (2000)

form==referring to entry in a form text field. Form text fied and first ref are to be bold and the second ref is not bold. Regardless of how I format 2nd ref I get first word not bold and second word bold (ie John Smith).

Try changing the "Preserve Formatting during Updates" Option which you can see when you are in the Insert Field Dialog Box and see what happens.

Reveal your fields (Alt-F9) and replace * MergeFormat with * CharFormat. This should help. Make sure that the first non-space character in each field is formatted the way you want the field result to be displayed. Then update each field (F9) and press Alt-F9 again to view your fixes.
