    Windows Restore (XP SP2)

    Hello,
I've had a weird situation happen to me.
I had a Trojan/Downloader type of application on my computer. You know, the type of application that gives you a popup window that comes from an Icon on the taskbar that says something like: "Your computer is infected with a virus.......... Click here to remove". (Oh and I never did click the popup window so it wouldn't download anything)
I've been trying to remove the darn thing for the past 4 days now.
The application wasn't doing much other than showing up the popup wich was a nuisance.
I worked with anti-viruses, anti-spyware, even tried Hijack This and other stuff to try and remove the darned application but never did find anything.
About one hour ago, I come back from a meeting, turn on my computer and POOF, no more application nuisance thingy.
1- Could the downloader application have left traces on my system before today so that the popups would appear but the virus itself had been removed somehow ?
2- Could windows have restored files that might have appeared corrupted ?
I'm really wondering what happened here
Can anybody shine some light on this problem ?
    This is a weird one...
Thanks in advance for any answer you could give me

What program were they trying to get you to download and install. That would give some direction as to what we are looking for and why it just went "POOF".

I have always been able to remove these types of infestations using Spybot S&D and Adaware in tandem.

It was trying to download an "anti-virus" which might have not been one.
I re-scanned my computer with AVG right after sending this message and the virus-scan found DOWNLOADER.GENERIC2.YVL which it hadn't found in the previous scans.
I'm starting to wonder if this particular downloader trojan was added by AVG to their virus database because AVG had made an update yesterday morning.
    This is really weird.
BTW I really wasn't able to see anything in particular with Spybot S&D nor with Adaware except the usual stuff I get just by surfing the net.
Anyways, I'm just trying to figure out what's going on in this case... If I ever come accross this kind of problem again, I'll know a little more what to do...

    Re: Windows Restore (XP SP2)

I had 2 clients this summer who were plagued by this AV popup. It's spyware. I don't recall off the top of my head what the product name was, but would know it if I heard it. One had actually purchased it and didn't understand why she had more ads after the purchase than before and one business owner who was being driven insane by the incessant popups. In both cases, Spybot detected and removed it and Adaware found something in the registry that I felt was part of the "hook", but was rendered ineffective by Spybot's removal effort.

Malware and viruses are almost always weird (like the sick people who write them) and are difficult to avoid completely, but even more difficult to detect and remove once onboard. Sounds like you made out OK. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>
