    Windows Installer (Win XP SP1)

My sister has a problem, she can't download anything including Windows Installer (which she tried to update). I sent her the download page for Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2). She wrote back that it would not download. What else can be done to get Windows Installer working again?

    All suggestions will be tried.
    Thanks, Gloria

Probably downloads were blocked. Open Internet Explorer, from Tools menu choose Internet Options, then click Security tab, make sure that Internet zone is selected and then click "Custom level" button under "Security level for this zone". On the next screen scroll down Settings window until you see Downloads settings. Make sure File Download is enabled; if not, enable it.

Before I passed this on to my sister I followed the path you provided and I saw no Security level for this zone. Perhaps she can see it and I know you do, but it's not mentioned on this computer. I will forward your message and hope and pray that she can follow your directions.

    Thanks for your help.

Re: Windows Installer (Win XP SP1)

    Opps!!!! My error, I made another boo-boo. I swear I don't understand why I didn't see it the first time I looked. Please forgive me and don't tag me with a stupid label. <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>

Perhaps it was late and my eyes were tired, or my brain was out of focus. My File Download is enabled and I will check if her's is too.

My sister reported that she followed your directions and still can't download. Any further thoughts?

Is she getting an error message? Is the problem only when she downloads from Microsoft? Is it Windows/Microsoft Update?

Re: Windows Installer (Win XP SP1)

I can just echo Joe's questions; but my first thought, when I quickly read your initial post before kaplinb's reply, was that maybe it had something to do with validation of the Windows copy, since I know the download is restricted to "customers running genuine Microsoft Windows".

But then I saw you mention: "she can't download anything"; so is there an error message, is there a problem on every site?

This is to reply to Argus and your question. Yes, she sees an error message that says Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Tonight I discovered that she does not have Administrative Tools from which she could reach Sevices to start Windows Installer. Is their a back door to Services? I believe if she could reach Services and turn it on, her problem would be solved.

She didn't try to install from Windows/Microsoft Update. She used the Windows Download page.

You and Joe asked the same question. Yes, there is an error message, "Windows Installer service could not be accessed." She can't reach services because there is no Aministrative Tools on her computer. I believe if she could reach it her problem would be solved because Windows Installer Service and be started or stopped from there. Is there a back door to Sevices?

I knew that someone here would have the answer, that's why this is my favorite discussion group. If it's not available here, it's not available anywhere.
Thank you Stuart, the members of this board deserves a medal, each and every one.

"... of this board deserves a medal ..."

Especially if they could guess that it was problem running the Windows Installer service, when the problem was presented as difficulties to download. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Wouldn't the topic 'Windows Installer' have given a clue to the problem? To some it might.
