    Windows Explorer (XP SP2)

    I have a set of files which are actual jpegs, however for my own reasons they have an skc extension (please don't ask why or suggest changing this.) I have used the file association to get these treated as jpegs for viewing, open and print. However I don't know how to get Windows Explorer to show the thumb nails. Can anyone suggest how to do this please?

    You could take a look at this article at Digital Photography Review which leads on to an article from Tech-Pro about using a registry hack. You would need to alter the extension to suit.

    If you do go down this route, make sure you have done a full backup before going ahead, but I'd wait and see if anyone else has ideas first!

    Create a new text file, then copy and paste the following content in it

    -----------Copy below this line--------------------------

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.skc]
    "PerceivedType"="image"
    @="jpegfile"
    "Content Type"="image/jpeg"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.skcPersistentHandler]
    @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

    -------------Copy above this line--------------------------------

    Save it and rename with .reg extension. Make sure that it has no hidden .txt extension - Windows will prompt you are you sure you want to change the extension - and confirm your choice (the icon will be changed to "Registry File"). Then merge (double-click) it into Registry.

    Re: Windows Explorer (XP SP2)

    I have tried both suggestions - see edit files below. My system has (so far) survived, but windows explorer is taking no notice (yes I have rebooted). I have looked with regedit and both mods have taken effect. It is not the files I am trying to see the thumbnails of - if I re-identify one with a jpg extension, up pops its thumnail. What am I missing here?

    I first did -
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.skc]
    "PerceivedType"="image"
    @="jpegfile"
    "Content Type"="image/jpeg"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.skcPersistentHandler]
    @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb

    then -

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.skc]
    @="Thumbnail"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.skc]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.skc{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @="{7376D660-C583-11D0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"

    Whoops - I read the Tech-Pro article more carefully, modified the registry again and - bingo I have liftoff! Thanks people!
