    Scrolling (Word 2003)

    Hello,

In this one document that I have openin Word, for some reason, in a certain section of the document, when I use my scroll function in my mouse pad, it doesn't let me scroll up. In addition, the page up function doesn't work in this document. It does, but every time it reaches the top of the section, it bounces back down again.

I can scroll down without any problem. But scrolling up doesn't work right.

Is this Word or my computer that is giving me a problem? Neither the page up key nor the scroll let's me get above the section break.

    Thank you,

    JMT

Without seeing the document, it's impossible to say whether it's caused by something in the document or by something else.

Is this document protected for forms?

Hello, I am not sure if the document is protected for forms. I don't know what that is.

It seems that the document is scrolling again. Maybe I changed something . The next time I catch it bouncing again I will cut out the appropriate pages and post it here for more clarification.

    Thank you,

    JMT

    Re: Scrolling (Word 2003)

    Hello,

I am attaching a document that is giving me this problem.

Go the way down to page 6. Then try scrolling upward with your laptop's touchpad scroller (don't use page up/page down and the arrows). It will scroll up fine, until you get to page 5. It will keep bouncing back to page 5 and won't let you get ot page 4. It is like there is a sticky trap at the words "Appendix: Compilation of Key Statutes and Rules."

    Any ideas?

I don't have a laptop or touchpad. I've tried various ways of moving upwards through the document: the arrow keys, the vertical scroll bar, the mouse wheel and the scroll function available by double clicking the mouse wheel. None of them exhibit the behavior you describe, so I fear I can't help you. Perhaps someone with a laptop can experiment with your document.

I also don't have a laptop but can reproduce a scrolling funny if I switch to web layout view and use the scroll wheel to move up the document.

Firstly, I would question the value of ever working in Web layout view.
Secondly, you can stop this odd behaviour by either removing the section break above the trigger line or by changing the section break to a 'New Page' type rather than an 'Odd Page' type. I suspect Word is being confused by 'odd page breaks' when in a screen only type view.

I scroll by brushing my finger up the right side of the touchpad. This does not move the selection, but the portion of the document visible at the time. No problems doing that. How are you doing it?

    Re: Scrolling (Word 2003)

    Hi All,

I am also scrolling by brushing my finger up the right side of the touchpad (and by the way, I am also using page layout; I never use web layout). Nevertheless, I sometimes get this bouncing problem and I sometimes don't. I am suspecting it is a hardware problem since its coming and going is so arbitrary and unpredictable. Next time it happens, I will connect my mouse and see if the problem is solved. If it is, then I know it's the touchpad.

    Sincerely,

    JMT

    Re: Scrolling (Word 2003)

    Hi All,

The problem just reappeared again, so I got my regular mouse and attached it to the laptop and the same problem that I was having with the touchpad was also there. So it's not the touchpad. But just as I was getting ready to upload the document to show you, the problem disappeared! So now I think the problem is a bug in Microsoft Word or Windows.

    Hopefully it will go away.

    Thanks!

When the problem appears - is it related to a section break? If you remove the section break, does the problem go away?

    Re: Scrolling (Word 2003)

It sure does. To date, I have found the problem only when there is an Odd Page section break. The problem is, I can't get rid of those. It is a manuscript I am preparing and I need the new sections to start on new odd pages.

    Thanks,

    JMT
