insert XL chart as transparent picture (any)

In XL i have a chart (XY scatter). I use copy and Paste Special - as Picture to insert into my Word document because I have had trouble with linked files. The background appears white (or sometimes off-white); the file size blows out enormously; and it takes forever to print. I think it's because the background has been imported as white, rather than transparent. The "set transparent' button is greyed out. Is there some better way of doing this?

    In Excel:
    . select the chart
. use Format|Selected Chart Area|Patters and set the area fill to 'None'
    . copy the chart
Then, in Word, paste the chart as an enhanced metafile, with or without linking.

If you want to, you can select and format the plot area the same way in Excel before copying & pasting.
