    BOOK1 load (Excel2003)

This should be simple but my brain seems to mis this....

    Every time I start-up Excel I get BOOK1 opened.

Of course I know what may cause this, so....

    (1) I checked XLSTART directories (and actually deleted them and created new ones), both in "Documents and Settings" and in "Program Files" (searched but there were no more XLSTART directories)

    (2) I started Excel with automation and later safe switch...

Nothing helps... what am I missing?

Have you also checked the location specified in the General tab of Tools | Options... in the box labeled "At start-up, open all files in"?

Now let's see. You say that BOOK1 is opened - you're sure it's not BOOK1.xls? (I hope you do show extensions such as .xls)

Don't know... my Main Window bar in Excel says: "Microsoft Excel - Book1"

(and yes, in Explorer I always show extensions)

Since you do show extensions and the caption says Book1, it is a new workbook, not one that is opened. Does Book1 have any cells populated with values or formulas, or it there any other type of content?

    Re: BOOK1 load (Excel2003)

I see no cells filled, nothing. No names, no links no objects.

Here's a thought: There is a DLL that is enabled here which takes care of document classification. I thought I could get around that by using the Safe or automation switch (the first thing I tried). I just looked as the system of a colleague and he has exactly the same "Book1" opening....
I'm pretty sure this must be it...

PS. When I don't have Excel open and double-click on an existing XLS, that is the only one that opens up (so there's no Book1).

    Re: BOOK1 load (Excel2003)

I think you're seeing the default behavior of Excel. If you start it by itself, it will create a blank new workbook Book1. If you open an existing workbook, this Book1 will disappear (provided you haven't modified it). Similarly, if you start Word by itself, it will create a blank new document Document1, and if you start PowerPoint by itself, it will create a blank new presentation Presentation1.

    Re: BOOK1 load (Excel2003)

So if this is not our DLL doing this (which I think is the cause), this autoopen a workbook or document is something one can switch off, right?

And if it is not my DLL, then the question would remain as to what this would be

    Re: BOOK1 load (Excel2003)

It's simply the way Excel behaves for everyone. I too get a blank workbook Book1 if I start Excel by clicking its shortcut. There is no reason to change this behavior.

The same switch works in Excel 2002 and 2003 too.
