Windows XP (SP2 I think)

Excuse me, but I don't really do this Windows stuff...
I've acquired a Dell Latitude D400 lapdog, allegedly with Win xp on it.
It fails to boot with a message involving "Stop: c000021a Fatatl System Error", which, apparently lots of victims have seen before, for a variety of reasons.
I'd quite like to do a complete reinstall of the OS and be done with it.
This lapdog has no CD drive (nor a floppy drive).
I have the original XP Pro CD, all of which I've copied onto a usb flash drive.
The lapdog has a suitable USB hole.
I've set the BIOS boot order to 'USB first' but it won't play with me - 'Disk Error', it says.
It can't access a network as Windows won't start.
It won't start in Safe Mode or any other option either.
Suggestions. please?
I'm happy to get the device drivers from Dell (I imagine they're there?) but the first priority is to get the thing to boot beyond the splash screen without falling over.
Idiot's guide help, please?

(Edited by DaveA on 09-Dec-06 09:07. Found better info.)
I will try again. Found the machine listed on the net. It requires a EXTERNAL cd drive and then you may not be able to use that to boot to.

Some companies will wipe the drive clean before turning loose of a machine.
How did you aquire this machine?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Just copying the XP CD to the flash drive, doesn't make it a bootable device.

There are many ways to do this but a fairly good one is to use PE Builder to make a Bart PE drive on your flash drive.

Check out one method to do this at: FLASH BOOT

Using PE Builder makes it easy to do this.

It is not enough to copy entire Windows XP Installation CD to USB drive, you also need to make USB drive bootable.

There are many utilities and instructions how to make it bootable. You can search the Internet for "make usb bootable" and read articles about this issue.

I can suggest to try Bart's Make Bootable Utility. This is command-line utility. Read Boot from USB Flash drive for step-by-step instructions.
