    Upgrade video card

I have a Dell 8200 with the original AGP VIdeo Card and a 250 Watt Power Supply. I want to upgrade to a newer video card to support Vista graphics. Some of the cards I have looked at require a larger power supply (450 W). Are there any good AGP video cards with onboard memory that will run with the 250 W PS?

    Re: Upgrade video card

Generally, the "better" a video card is, the more juice it takes. If you want to stick with your current power supply, you may have to go with a lower end AGP card (make sure you don't get PCIexpress).

What are you planning on using this video card for? How much memory are you thinking of? Is it possible for you to upgrade your power supply?

edit: i just noticed you mentioned you wanted to use it for Vista. My gut feeling is that 250W won't support any card needed to run Vista with Aero enabled, I'll go check the Vista specs again though.

    Re: Upgrade video card

I have never replaced a PowerSupply and was hoping not to start. The 8200 has a 4X AGP slot so that is one limiting factor. Another potential problem maybe the heat factor. I understand that some of the cards run hot.

I am not a "gamer," I just want to run Aero Glass. The video card that came with the system does not have onboard memory - it uses system memory which I understand willnot support Aero.

Otherwise the 8200 will support Vista: 1 GB RAM, 80GB HD, DVD

    Re: Upgrade video card

the 4x AGP wont be a problem, i sure most AGP cards will run in a slower slot.

but from what i've been reading recently, i'm lead to believe that you need quite a fast PC to run vista with aero glass on.

    3 ghz processor
    128mb vid card (min)

the the rest of the spec you have stated.

but something like the 7300 gt might do the trick on the video card front, but i'm sure you'll need a power supply upgrade for it.

    Re: Upgrade video card

A 250 watt PS is on the "slim" side at any rate, but to run Vista waero almost mandates an upgrade to a larger PS. 450 and above is better.

A video card that uses system RAM is also a big deterrent. 4x or 8x probably wouldn't be much problem but without built in video RAM? Don't think so.

I'm not very familiar with the Dell 8200 but it sounds like it's not the best match for Vista at all.

I'm not familiar with that system; we bought the systems with lower numbers (more like 4150, etc.). Another forum to try for comments/advice is Dell's hardware upgrade forum for Dimensions: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/bo...rd.id=dim_upghw
