footnotes disappeared (Word 2002 XP)

A very large document approx 200 pages contained many footnotes, nearly on every page.

The footnotes were in the doc about lunch time. In the evening all the footnotes except 2 had disappeared.

How could this be? It wouldn't be related to applying a different heading style applied onto the paragraph containing the footnote would it? initially the footnote is in heading style "Footnote Reference".

Footnotes are gone from the bottoms of the pages, or reference numbers are gone from the text, or both? Changing the style shouldn't change the underlying binary identity of a particular bits of data as footnotes. However, it could render the numbers very difficult to see in the body.

well actually both...the reference numbers are gone from the text, which means the footnotes arent displaying on the bottom of the pages )
