    Can't install Media Player 11

I tried installing Media Player 11. It tells me that I need to run Update Rollup 2. However, when I try that, it tells me I must have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. However, I do have Edition 2005. I can't seem to get out of this eternal loop. Any ideas.

    Viking:
Thanks for the information. I've tried everything I can. I have downloaded all of the upgrades for Media Center Edition 2005, but I am still told by some upgrades that I must have 2005 edition before they will upgrade. I already have Edition 2005. But, for some reason, the upgrades or rollups will not recognize it. I guess I'm stuck with Media Player 10.

Re: Can't install Media Player 11

    Ray,
There is some more info at the MSKB article that you might check.
    In essence it says
"To obtain Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, visit the Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/)
    Release Date: Oct. 14, 2005

Note To install this update, you must have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 installed. Windows Update detects whether these packages are installed. Windows Update automatically installs these packages for you.

If the 886904 update is installed, you must uninstall the 886904 update before you install Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Otherwise, the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 installation will not succeed .

To determine whether the 886904 update is installed, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click to select the Show Updates check box.
    3. In the Currently installed programs list, look for the following item:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904)
If this item appears, you must remove the hotfix. To remove the hotfix, click Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904), and then click Remove. Then, visit the Windows Update Web sit to download and install Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005".

    Viking33:

I have Net Framework 1.1, Net Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903), and Net Framework 2.0 installed. I do not have 886904 installed. I have tried to install a number of files I downloaded for Media 2005. I tried installing Windows Media 10-KB913800-x86-ENU.exe but it would not install and gave me the following log (attached). Question: Is the 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903) actually 04??

Re: Can't install Media Player 11

Ray, Here is what MS says regarding this.
    ------------------------------------------------
There are two separate components that will need to be installed on your system. The .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 install does not add an entry in your Add/Remove Programs dialog to show that it is installed, but the Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 will show up in the Add/Remove Programs dialog if it is installed.

If you have these two entries in your Add/Remove Programs dialog, .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 is installed:

    Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903)
The Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903) requires that the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 be installed before the installation will complete. If you have this Hotfix, you have Service Pack 1 for .NET Framework 1.1.

If you have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904) it will have to be uninstalled to install .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

Note: Hotfix KB886904 is a hotfix for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. It does not contain .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, nor is it possible to install .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pak 1 on a machine with Hotfix KB886904. . NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 includes Hotfix KB886903 which is equivalent to hotfix KB886904, so uninstalling Hotfix KB886904 and installing .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pak will not lower the security level.

    ( underlining is mine )

    Viking33:

I'm sort of slow, but I think you are telling me that if I haveKB886903 that Framework 1:1 that I have what is needed. I don't have KB886904. I've looked in the update part and it isn't there. So, what do I need to do now?

Re: Can't install Media Player 11

    Ray,
It isn't the clearest explanation in the world but if you look in AddRemove programs and if it lists these two entries:
    Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903)

Then you should be OK, since SP1 is included in these two hotfixes. Part of SP1 includes KB886904.
    This is typical Microsoft speak.

So if you see those two entries and no mention of KB886904, the you should be OK. Got it? <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

Got it. Thanks. The only problem, when I try to install Windows Media Player 11, I'm told that I need Rollup 2. When I try to install it, I am told I do not have Media Edition 2005. But, I do. It is a vicious circle.

See Error message when you try to install Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005: "Setup failed" and Aaron Stebner's WebLog : Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 troubleshooting guide.

From Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005:

    Media Center Technical Support
Because Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition was included with your hardware device or system, the hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for this software. Your manufacturer may have customized the installation with unique components such as specific device drivers and optional settings to maximize the performance of that manufacturer's hardware. If you require technical help with Windows XP Media Center Edition, contact your manufacturer directly because the manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that the manufacturer has installed on the hardware.

Have you tried contacting the vendor?
