media player updates (XP / SP2)

I have three computers here all running XP with SP2 and Media Player 11. Today all three want to install a security update for Media Player 6.4! Whats up with that?
Please don't tell me that MS made a mistake, because then I'll have to start doubting the existence of Santa Clause too!

You wouldn't believe it - Windows Media Player 6.4 is part of Windows XP, and as such is "always installed" and is used by Windows for playing, for instance, "Windows XP Logon Sound" during startup.

You can find it (and create a shortcut, if you wish) under

C:Program FilesWindows Media Playermplayer2.exe

Al,

I've got 29 objects in my WMP folder and mplayer2.exe is one. Looks as though you may have it sorted by date and the date on mplayer2 is old. Sure, it isn't down a little?

Re: media player updates (XP / SP2)

Nah. I searched my whole drive for the mplayer2.exe just in case MCE puts it in a different place. (BTW, the list was sorted by type so I could see all the EXEs together.)

Meanwhile, I'm continuing to Google on the original question, but I haven't come up with an answer yet. Lots of hits, but no solid answer...

Re: media player updates (XP / SP2)

My apologies! I think when I answered Joe's post I came up with a confirmation that YOU are correct!

My current primary machine runs Windows Media Center Edition, fully patched and updated. The file is not on the machine. BUT, on my other machine which runs XP Pro, also fully patched, the file IS right where you said it would be. Checking its properties reveals Version 6.4.something (I didn't write down the rest of the #s)

Mea culpa...

Well as far as the original question goes, if mplayer2 is on your PC and Microsoft issues a patch for you should get it. It is not a mistake. I'm sure that mplayer2 is part of the original XP distribution and so is on all PCs that had the original XP (XP upgrade).

I do believe you're right Joe, and I think that was the intent of Kaplinb's post, to tell the OP that he should go with the update. Whooee, it's Friday!

Re: media player updates (XP / SP2)

As many times before, many questions can be answered if one take a look at the bulletin that corresponds with the update (sometimes they get things wrong and have a revision out, so it can of course change over time).

In this case there are three updates (for two vulnerabilities):
Microsoft Windows Media Format 7.1 through 9.5 Series Runtime
Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 Series Runtime x64 Edition
Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4
affecting different operating system. Some, XP Pro x64, need all three if not running WMP 11.

From the bulletin (as it happens, the question was in the FAQ!):

I have installed Windows Media Player 11 on my computer. Why am I being offered the Windows Media Player 6.4 security update?

While Windows Media Player 11 is not vulnerable, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition will still have Windows Media Player 6.4 installed on the system for backwards compatibility.

As to the files to update for Media Player 6.4, they are:

Dxmasf.dll, new version: 6.4.9.1133
Strmdll.dll, new version: 4.1.0.3936

So, both kaplinb and Joe are correct.
