    adding shortcut to Programs menu (XP Sp2)

    Hi,

    I have a request from an internal customer to in Access 97 to pcs that will already have Access 2002. They need both versions. No problem.

    They want an automatic way to add access 97 on to the Programs menu since Access 2002 is already there.

    There will be about 1500 pcs to install on hence the need for automation. The customer wants a bat file his users can execute.

    Any suggestions?

    TIA,

    Jimmy Lee

    You can do it using Windows Script.

    Create VBS file (a text file with .vbs extension) and copy and paste the following to it:

    --------------------------------Beginning of VBS file-----------------------------------------------------------

    On Error Resume Next
    Dim WSHShell
    Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    Dim MyShortcut
    Set MyShortcut = WSHShell.CreateShortcut("Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsMicrosoft Office" _
    & "Access 97.lnk")
    MyShortcut.TargetPath = WSHShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICEMSACCESS.EXE")
    MyShortcut.WorkingDirectory = WSHShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE")
    MyShortcut.WindowStyle = 4
    MyShortcut.IconLocation = WSHShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICEMSACCESS.EXE, 0")
    MyShortcut.Save
    Set MyShortcut = Nothing
    WScript.Echo "A shortcut to Microsoft Access 97 now exists in Programs menu."

    -----------------------------End of VBS file--------------------------------------------------------------------

    Check filenames and paths in the script.

    To execute the script, run following command on each compuer:

    WSCRIPT.EXE [ path ]SHORTCUT.VBS

    Presuming SHORTCUT.VBS is the filename of your script and path is a path to the drive where the shortcut is.

    You can create a bat file with this command. VBS file also can be run by double-clicking from the network or local drive (if you prefer it).

    There's a SHORTCUT program available from Marty List at OptimumX, but you'd have to put a fair amount of BATch file (and PSEXEC) round it to get it to execute on 1500 PCs... But do-able.

    I'm puzzled by your use of ExpandEnvironmentStrings. <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

    You are absolutely correct, it must be %programfiles%
    But it works as it is - does it?

    Re: adding shortcut to Programs menu (XP Sp2)

    To add to my previous post.

    The way I used to do this is to use a computers.txt file containing (surprise!) the names of all the PCs to be updated, then for each one check that it was PINGable, and apply the update. If it wasn't updateable I would write its name to a notupdated.txt file, which would be renamed as computers.txt, ready for the next run some hours or days later. Repeat ad nauseam or until boredom sets in.
