    Automatically numbering all headings (2003)

I am grateful to have the opportunity to access the vast pool of knowledge that members of this forum possess.

I have two documents that I need to merge. Each document has its headings numbered like 1, 1.1, 1.1.1. Both documents start their numbering from the start. The issue at hand is how to automatically renumber the second half of the document containing it all. A means, I thought, would be styles. If all the headings can be "styled" right (i.e. specified as Heading 1, Heading 2 and so on), then it may be possible. I don't know how.

    Greatly appreciate your help.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

If both documents use the built-in Heading 1, Heading 2 etc. styles, you can easily apply numbering by selecting the Outline Numbered tab in the Format | Bullets and Numbering dialog. Select the numbering using Heading styles (see below). If you then merge the two documents, the numbering in the second half will automatically adjust itself, you won't have to do anything special for it.

    HansV,

Your suggestion worked. I greatly appreciate it.
