    viral pictures

    I'm flabbergasted.
    The world's best web designer I'm not. My web site is a test vehicle for an html generator.
    That said, I'd hoped that by:
    (1) setting up 12 Google Blogs which point to my web site
    (2) setting up web site pages which point to my blogs
    (3) incorporating Google's AdSense in both
    that Google would recognise & index me so that my pages showed up in Google search.

    nada.
    For months.

    Then I grab some pictures from somewhere or other (Scuttlebut?) and post them on an isolated (unlinked) page to show my friend who had sent to me photos of a Bolivian highway, and suddenly I'm getting emails from magazine & newspaper editors asking me for the source. Offering me money, even.

    It is said that "a picture is worth a thousand words", but here am I trying to get properly noticed by text search engines, and the only thing I'm famous for is some photos I posted for my friend to see.

    You can Google for "Russian federal Highway" to see how many other sites have these photos.

    Re: viral pictures

    Weird isn't it. The reason is probably that in the Russian Highway pictures you are using meta tags to assist search engines in your blog you are not.

    You should try and get tags put in the underworld blog like this in the head tags

    <meta name="description" xml:lang="en-US" content="Chris Greaves talks about a load of stuff on his really interesting blog spot" />
    <meta name="keywords" xml:lang="en-US" content="Excel, VBA, VB, Venus the Cat, How to take cream from Coffee shops" />
    <meta name="Author" xml:lang="en-US" content="Chris Greaves"/>

    This is the type of information that will get you indexed. I suggest you go to http://www.netmechanic.com/ or similar and get assistance with your key words for search engine optimisation...my <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

    Maybe your friend is one of those "super connectors" whose network includes journalists. A very useful relationship to have. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    As for blog indexing, who knows? Given the amount of blog entries generated each day around the globe, there must be some kind of special filter.

    Thanks Jezza- I didn't know about how meta tags worked- until now. Much appreciated.

    Re: viral pictures

    The key words bit is by far the most important, just be bery careful about your selection ie

    If you have

    1) magic Google will find 238,000,000
    2) magic forest Google will find 6,110,000
    3) "magic forest" Google will find 214,000
    4) "magic forest" + Jezza Google will find 15

    number 2 is not finding the string magic forest but the two words seperately, no 3 is in between commas, no 4 is like 3 but there is a seperate jezza in the list

    So my tag will contain ...>jezza, jezza bear, magic forest, kitchen table, kitchen table science...

    The comma position is very important and each one designates the end of a string

    Thanks Jezza.

    And I've also used your hints in another thread to ensure that the meta tags are not ignored. I'll have to see how it goes- thanks for the ideas.

    Nah. Think Prince Rupert, BC. Literally, the end of the highway!

    Good guess, but in my web pages I have tried both with and without keywords. (50% of the How To sites say keywords are useless, 50% say they are good), with the same results. No Show.

    I will check out your NetMechanic reference as I plan on rebuilding the site over the Christmas break.

    Hi Chris

    Something that I have just discovered via an email from Google Adsense is the new Custom Search Engine. I have just created one using their very simple wizard. This is the basic premise:

    <hr>
    * Place a search box and search results on your website.
    * Specify or prioritize the sites you want to include in searches.
    * Customize the look and feel to match your website.
    * Invite your community to contribute to the search engine.
    <hr>

    I have just tested it with some keywords and prioritised the search to two specific sites and it has provided some promising results, go to

    Where is your link then? (grin!)
    Thanks for the tip. I'll have a shot at it, once I can get back into my web site.

    Oooh you are a bully Mr G <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    The test index page is created and my domain has had a hiccough for about an hour and was not accepting FTP connections. Excuses over, here it is on an index test page, I will not incorporate it until I am happy and I have changed the formatting of my page....enjoy

    Now I have put it on a test page, I am not sure I like the way it behaves. I use Firefox as my main browser and when I do a search it creates the results page in Firefox but when I click on a link it breaks out of the browser into Internet Explorer, which is totally bizarre.

    It is quite nice as I have set specific sites that I want it to priority search, New Scientist.com and bbc.co.uk , and you can select my preference and then search the WWW without preference.

    I have just realised that I had not added my site as a preference[dooh] , just done so and it appears to be working

    So jury still out, test it and see what you think.
