Track Changes vs iRedline (2003)

We have a consultant who is "talking up" iRedline. Does anyone know what iRedline has to offer that Word's Track Changes does not? Also, is there also a "red line" feature in Word other than Track Changes? ???

The benefit of a redlining tool like iRedline or Workshare's Deltaview, is that you receive a comparison document that contains all the changes. You have the ability to save your rendering sets (i.e. how you would like your results to appear) so that they can be used over and over again. These programs can compare down to the character level, track formatting, and show moves. In the legal industry, a comparison program is invaluable, since we need that historical copy of changes without modifying the original document or the "updated" document.

Microsoft's track changes does not give you the historical copy that a redlining program can. It does not allow you to save your rendering sets and also does not track moves (instead is show an insertion and deletion). There are also inconsistencies with Track changes. Depending on the version of Word you are using and what version of Word others working on the same file are using, you can run up against inconsistencies in tracking and in some cases actually lose text. Microsoft does have a Compare and Merge documents feature in Office 2003 and higher, but it uses the same Track Changes tech to show you your document.

If you need a historical copy of the changes, you need a redlining or comparison program. Make sure you thoroughly test any program in your environment before purchasing though. Depending on your setup, you may find that one program works better than others. Workshare's Deltaview is what we use and it works rather well.

I hope this helps! Happy Holidays!

You don't need a third party program for "real time" change marking. However, unless you trust all your collaborators to mark every change, then an "after-the-fact" change program can be very useful. In complex documents, Word's after-the-fact comparison feature often breaks down. By "breaks down" I mean it shows deletions and insertions of identical (unchanged) text. Its effectiveness has varied from version to version, and often yielded different different results between Word 97 and Word 2000, for example.

I haven't tried iRedline, and haven't tried Deltaview for many years.

    Hi Jefferson

Word's after-the-fact comparison feature

Can you tell me how to access this feature? Or are you just referring to the "Compare and Merge" feature?
    Regards
    Don
