Outlook 2002 dependcy on Outlook express (2002/XP)

Having just installed Outlook 2002 (as part of Office XP install), I have realized that Outlook 2002 now is dependent on outlook Express being installed. I found this out by removing express and then finding that outlook stopped working.

Could anyone explain why this dependency. Outlook 97/98 did not require outlook express (I don't know about outlook 2000 since I have never installed it.

The reason I ask is that I would rather not give my users access to outlook express - it's just another potential support headache.

    Thank you.

they share a lot of dlls - most places have had luck with removing the shortcuts to express and the msimn.exe file only, rather than a true uninstall.

    Using Outlook as you "News reader" really uses OE's newsreader <img src=/S/aflame.gif border=0 alt=aflame width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/fire.gif border=0 alt=fire width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
