    Install ActiveSync from download?

I borrowed an HP iPAQ from the office to learn its capabilities. Looking at a couple software development programs, but both of them want to run in conjunction with ActiveSync. I neglected to bring the iPAQ's installation CD and I don't want to drive back to the office to retrieve it. So I tried downloading ActiveSync 4.2 and 4.5beta from Microsoft's site. Both of them fail to finish the Installation procedure -- they quit with a message that the installation has been aborted and nothing has been changed on the system.

My *guess* is that they are intended to be upgrades of existing ActiveSync installations, and are not meant as "fresh installs". Is that correct? If not, is there a way for me to download and install ActiveSync on a computer that's never seen it before? Otherwise, I will have to drive back to the office to retrieve the CD, and I'm too lazy to do that ;-)

I have downloaded and installed ActiveSync from the Microsoft web site in the past, but my PCs only have version 3.8. Can you find an older version on the Microsoft web site to try?

    Hi Jack

I don't know how old your Ipaq's are but they may not like the latest versions of activesync. As Stuart has mentioned 3.8 is probably the option. It appears that a lot of sites have updated to 4.2. But on searching I have found:

http://www.softlookup.com/display.asp?id=68035 which you could try [AS 3.8]

    Re: Install ActiveSync from download?

Thanks for the info, Jerry and Stuart, but I am still stuck. If you have any other ideas, I am all ears!

The link to AS3.8 is dead -- the download site doesn't exist any more. I suspect it pointed to an obsolete Microsoft.com site. However I found somebody else online that had a similar problem which he solved by installing AS3.7. I managed to find a copy of AS3.7 and installed it, kinda sorta. The installation completes properly but it reports that there is no connection between the PC and the iPAQ. What's really strange is that the Windows bing-bong notification is activated as I cycle the power on the iPAQ in the cradle, so there is clearly *some* connection between the two devices.

I tried disabling the Windows Firewall and/or opening the ports that Microsoft suggests could cause the problem, to no avail.

Tried installing 4.2 over top of 3.7, but it still refuses to install. Tried installing the application-development software, but it wants an active connection to the mobile device so that it can install software onto the device.

I am beginning to doubt that even if I had the original CD that it would install properly -- I found an online reference that says the download AS installation software is a full replacement for the CD software. There may be some issue with this computer that's causing the failure. But I have run out of ideas!

The iPAQ is brand-new to me, but it's an discontinued HP model. IIRC it's an HP2190 (or perhaps a 2090 -- I can't find the model number written anywhere.)

You can find the model number from System Settings > Asset Viewer

I also suspect you may have some other problem on your PC, but I can't imagine what it is.

    Edited to add
There seems to be a copy of ActiveSync 3.8 here.

    Re: Install ActiveSync from download?

Thanks again Stuart. It's an HP iPAQ hx2190

Installing 3.8 made no difference, but I subsequently checked the Windows Device Manager. There is a device called "HP USB sync" -- it is tagged with the yellow question mark. I deleted the device, and it tried to re-install itself upon running ActiveSync. It asked for a CD installation disk (which I don't have at this location). Installation program was unable to find the appropriate driver by searching on the Internet. I tried searching manually, but every link that I could find eventually lead back to Microsoft's site, which doesn't seem to actually have it any longer (at least, not that I could find).

Looks like I will have to wait until I get back to the office to retrieve the original installation CD.

    I appreciate your input!

Were you installing activesync, while the Ipaq was connected to the PC ?
