    Extra Spaces when cross references are updated (word 2000)

    I am encountering a problem with space being inserted in front of cross references when I re-open a closed word document. Prior to saving and closing the document the formatting appears good on the screen. Only some cross references in the document are affected, but those that are always get pushed forward to a new page, leaving space between the last word before the cross reference and the cross reference itself (which is on the next page). I have only noticed this in instances where the cross reference is inserted into a sentence.

    Could you attach a small sample document that exhibits this behavior? Remove or replace sensitive or proprietary contents.

    Here is a sample. The cross reference to table 1 initially was positioned after "threshold/measures in".

    There is a manual page break before the table caption above the table. This page break has - no doubt inadvertently - become included in the range the cross reference refers to. Try inserting the cross reference anew, or if that doesn't work, first insert the caption for the table anew, then the cross reference.

    Hans, I continue to reset the references as you suggest and it works some of the time, but inevitably when I reopen the document, a few of the references have the inadvertent break inserted back into the document. Is there a formatting control on the cross reference that could cause this?

    I can't explain this behavior. You might try the following:
    - Click inside the cross reference.
    - Press Shift+F9 or right-click, then select Toggle Field Codes.
    - You'll see something like { REF _Ref149332521 }
    - Copy the bookmark name (in this example _Ref149332521) to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
    - Mark (select) the table caption, making sure *not* to include the page break before it.
    - Select Insert | Bookmark...
    - Paste the bookmark name (Ctrl+V).
    - Click Add.
    - Click OK.
    - Click inside the cross reference again.
    - Press F9 to hide the field codes and update the field.
    The extra page break should disappear. When I do this, it stays OK after saving, closing and reopening the document.
