    RAM

I just updated my sons PC with a total of 1 gig of ram. aw some results, before he had 256 ddr 333 in it only. my PC has 2 gigs of ram (ddr) 333, so i took his 256 and added it to one of my extra slots, it doesn't seem to be recognizing it, do i need to make changes in the bios?

or would i need another identical 256 stick to go next to it? also, after installing the extra 256 in my machine i notice frequent lock ups, even more than before. winxp media

    thanks

Did you check to make sure the RAM is compatible with your PC? What is the maximum your PC will support?

    Re: RAM

Memory is a question that is VERY specific and unique to a motherboard. The specification of the RAM sticks, voltage, etc., whether it must be installed in pairs and which slot first and so on, can't be answered without the details about YOUR motherboard. If you DO install incorrect or mismatched memory, yes, lockup and possibly lots more problems will show up.

If you don't have a user manual for your motherboard, it can be looked up on the internet. If you need to find out the nomenclature of the motherboard, download and install the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> utility here:

Another alternative is to have your system scanned for appropriate memory updates. Crucial is one option. "Memory upgrade" at Google will provide other choices.

    Re: RAM

Mixing different memory speeds in the same PC almost always leads to instability and lock ups. If you already have 2GB of memory then adding an extra 256K isn't going to make a noticable difference anyway - just remove it again.

Yes. "adding an extra 256K isn't going to make a noticable difference anyway - just remove it again."
