    Unexpected Shutdown (Win XP)

    Hi everyone

We have about 40 XP machines in my office. Most are only SP1 at the moment.

About 6 months back the company installed a WUS server. Since then my office has been excluded from the updates because of some issues it caused us, some machines still collected updates though. Since this time more and more machines have had unexpected shutdowns, ALWAYS when the user clears the screensaver by loggin back on and the shutdown always then hangs at "saving settings". This was only happening to the SP1 machines, SP2 machines were fine. Until now. They've started doing as of Wednesday. Our IT dept have no idea why.

I can't find any mention of similar problems by searching around can anybody help? Has anybody seen anything like this before?

Is this WUS server of which you speak WSUS (Windows Server Update Services)? Or do you think the server is underpowered? <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

All that WSUS does is the automatic and managed deployment of patches/hotfixes, and it seems surprising that your IT department hasn't deployed XP SP2 company-wide. Presumably they have checked the System Event Log and the WIndows Update log (C:WindowsWindowsUpdate.log) on each machine, and so on?

Knowing my firm it's probably the latter!

We've checked all of the likely places for some indication as to why it's going on but nothing gives. It's made worse by the fact we're the only dept in the company with the problem. Yes we do run some different apps (I'm in the Finance dept ) but there is no apparant reason for the machines doing this.

Do you mean that after the user enters their password the machine begins an orderly shutdown? Does the desktop appear? Strange things happen when a screensave has been corrupted. Have you tried a different screensaver?

That's exactly it Joe. After the user has keyed their password the machine begins to shutdown. It doesn't matter what apps are running. They logon and then the machine shuts down as if they've told it to. Only thing being that every one of them will hang saying "Saving settings". We've left some for several minutes to see if it would clear but it just hangs. Ctrl+Alt+Del has no reponse, nor the mouse.

Sorry, meant to say as well...

We have the default screensaver with the clouds rolling over the hills and can't change them. The company uses a standard build for it's machines and as said we're the only dept known to be suffering. Also, it's a range of different Dell desktops and various Toshiba laptops.

Most likely XP is waiting for a response from some resource. Do you have any power saving schemes enabled? Has your network changed recently such as adding or removing devices or shares?

    Re: Unexpected Shutdown (Win XP)

No changes to resources or shares on the network and nothing much in terms of power saving schemes. Default stuff, if the screen saver has run for a while then the monitor goes into standby mode but the desktops will not shutdown in anyway as a result.

As I said, after several months of this happening to the SP1 machines, it's only just started to happen to the SP2 machines.

It's starting to feel like the more we look at it the stranger it gets. There is little consistancy as to when it happens of who it happens to. Like something on the network is triggering it. That's why we wondered if it was to do with the WSUS server that was installed as it started happening soon after this.

Sounds like they are going into "Hibernation" and are having trouble waking up. Try turning the hibernation off on a few of these machines and see if that makes a difference.
It is a known problem, some machines may take 30 minutes to wake up from hibernation.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
