    Drive-letters reset (WinXP)

In the past, I always 'fixed' drive letters of my CD players to V: for the CD/DVD ROM and W: for the CD/DVD RW. Recently when I do this it works only for the current session and keeps on re-setting to the Windows default every time I reboot.

This is also a nuisance as I ocasionally connect USB HD's and/or USB sticks, I do not want driver letter assignements to EVER change on me.

    (1) What might be causing this and how could I prevent this (and let me go back to the way I had it before)?
    (2) If (1) fails, are there tools/registry settings that help me fix this?

Thanks for any advice / help here ;-)

Unfortunately, you did not specify which edition of Windows XP (Home or Professonal) do you use and, most important, which way did you change drive letter.

To change drive letters, you must logon to the account with Administrator rights.
The proper way to change drive letters is to open Computer Management applet (click Start | Run, type COMPMGMT.MSC and hit Enter), then on the left pane select Disk Management under Storage, next scroll down lower right pane until you see your devise and right-click device icon (where CR-ROM0, CD-ROM1, etc, descriptions are) and from pop-up menu select "Change Drive Letter and Path"; on the next screen click Change button and select available letter.

However, it is possible to change a drive letter in the Registry. DO NOT use this method if you are unfamiliar with Windows Registry! For entering a wrong key you can crash your Windows installation!
To change drive letter, rename corresponding DWORD value in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMMountedDevices
(for example, rename DosDevicesD: to DosDevicesV: )

Sorry, I use XP Pro, am Admin and make the changes in the Computer Management applet exactly as you describe...

Anyone with an idea? Should I work in the registry (I'm comfortable with that by the way); just still wondering what makes this happen

    Are you running Zone Alarm?
    Could it be this?

    Hi Elaine,

Don't know about the other folks but that link hit home for me. I do use Zone Alarm Pro and the description matches my problem situation to the "T". I do not intend to revert to a previous version of ZAP to see if that corrects the problem. I'll stay tuned for future updates.

Thanks again for finding that item!!

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

I agree with Bob, and will wait for the nest major rev to see if they get it fixed.
