Forgot XP Password (WIN XP HOME SP2)

A friend who has never used a password with his Windows XP system suddenly found the computer demanding that he input a password in order to have XP startup. He has put in two passwords he used for his internet access but neither work. How can one change or eliminate the need for the password when starting Windows XP?

If this is XP home then you can probably boot into Safe Mode and then log in as administrator with a blank password.

This should enable you to use Control Panel > User Accounts to reset the passwords on other accounts.

If all else fails, you can download an image for a boot disk with a handy program to erase the Administrator password. I haven't used this for some time, but I believe this was the URL: Offline NT Password & Registry Editor.

Sorry I did not reply earlier but going into SAFE MODE allowed us to resolve the issue totally. Thanks for your help.
