Remove both of them - you should be on JRE 6! (Accept the licence agreement, then tick and download the first one).

    Jeff

I am going to be a big girls blouse now and just warn you that I too have two installations of Java Runtime. The reason for it is because I have one that is invoked via my IE to run a third party server based application at work and the other one runs using my CRM system. The two coexist quite happily but are mutually exclusive not mutually inclusive. So whilst John is quite right to call for the update, just make sure that your installed applications will run if they are uninstalled.

There are surely very few instances of software written for a particular level of the Java Runtime Environment, because shouldn't everything play nicely with the newest version?

The average XP Home computer user shouldn't need to worry about compatibility, should s/he?

Granted John but from the business perspective there are Oracle jinitiator versions that are used for Oracle financial applications etc and there are browser versions. So I am not disageeing with you just being cautious, that's all.

I had the boring job of testing an online document management system for compatibility for W2K and XP. IE6 SP1 and SP2 early in 2006. It required a specific java runtime version and it totally failed to work in WinXP. Home versions won't be so problematic..... <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    John,

Why do you recommend the removal of J2SE versions of Java?

I have JRE 6 plus J2SE 5.0 update 10 <big>hopefully</big> residing happily side by side?

See <post:=622,417>post 622,417</post:>. Unless there is a specific release required by some application there is no reason to have more than one installed. And as long as you have one you probably ought to have the latest.

Agreed, but that doesn't answer the question of JRE vs. J2SE. Or does it?

They're the same thing in this instance. Sun just titled them slightly differently in Add/Remove programs for the different versions.

    John,

Your link contains a session ID and just dumps me to a login page. Can you give instructions to navigate to Java 6 Run Time Environment, as I can only find Jave 5 Update 10 when I browse the site.

The JR6 link requires a login and registration etc. However I have updated to JR5 v10 and deleted the others versions (5 & 9).......so far no apparent problems

Sorry, folks. Going one step back, to get JRE 6 you select the fourth button down in this page.

I've never registered at Sun's site and have been able to download JRE6 on several machines. See <post:=622,653>post 622,653</post:> for a direct link.
