    Harddrive starts up by itself

A neighbor has a desktop that gets light usage: some Internet, some solitaire. Lately, she and her husband have noticed that the harddrive will start up by itself, even it the wife is just playing solitaire. they ahve Norton antivirus. Things check out OK. I don't think it's Liveupdate running, because they've had the PC for a couple of years and this has just started. No new software installation.
Any thoughts on how to track this down?
    Thanks.

There's a whole raft of 'things' which go on in a supposedly-idle PC, as you will see from running the (originally) SysInternals Process Monitor. Whether you (or anyone outside Microsoft!) understand the output is another matter!

Also note. I don't run Norton so I can't say if this is the case. Sometimes a software company will change THEIR application in such a way as to cause a change in evident behaviour. Perhaps Symantec updated something that's causing this apparent spurious drive activity. On the other hand, you might also ask your neighbors if they occasionally run any spyware detection software, just to be absolutely sure nothing has snuck in under the radar. I'm thinking mainly AdAware and Spybot from this StarPost: <post:=296,439>post 296,439</post:>.

Are they certain it's HD activity and not fan activity ??? A friend has a Dell desktop that started making lots of noise after a couple years of light use. Turned out to be a fan going on in response to an internal thermostat. Opening the case and cleaning out the dust bunnies stopped the fan activity. It was simply starting to run hot from the lack of air circulation.

Thanks for the suggestions. I learned the PC is in their Maine house, so when they return to Maine they will clean it out and see if that helps.
