Pesky Tray (XP MCE SP2)

Old problem. Never solved. Doggone it. TSR icons in the tray somehow get moved by Windows into the "Past Items" category and don't show up. In the case of my Palm Sync software it's OK 'cause the cradle activates it. But sometimes that missing icon is the only way to execute a program! I downloaded a fresh copy of Kelly's repair tool ( Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! ) even though I thought I remember that it didn't fix the problem. I tried two different selections and it seemed to worsen rather than fix the problem - less icons showing than before the running. In spite of the program NOT asking for it, I did a reboot and it has (for now!) shown all the correct icons. It did leave a little startling residue behind - see attachment - that was easily fixed just by entering desktop properties and changing something and coming out.

Do you have "Hide Inactive Icons" check in the "Task bar" properties?
This is one of the FIRST things that get turned off on ALL of my machines.

Yes Dave, I have it turned ON (checkmark) as I've always done so that I can suppress those icons that don't NEED to be shown. Do you think it's connected to this spurious problem or have you had some other problem with the tray that makes you un-check that option?

When the ICONS disappear there is NO simple way to get them back. so I have just removed the check and do NOT alow a lot of things run. At this time I have 9 icons showing. There are two that I exit after every boot, one of them is the Sony and HP update process and the other is related to my OCR program.

Al,

Do you use the Customize option in the Notification area of the Taskbar Properties window ?? I use that to set the icons the way I want them and I don't get any I don't want and only see the ones I want once the system has booted up.

Re: Pesky Tray (XP MCE SP2)

First let me tell Dave that yesterday, after fooling with Kelly's task bar program and re-booting I did have all of my tray icons back. Just for the heck of it, since you raised the question, I un-checked the box for hiding and of course that grays out the option. This morning when I booted (I do it every A.M.) one icon doesn't appear in the tray, so I don't think your trick is the solution.

Now Doc, yes I do use the customize screen and in my case I have ALL selected to "always show" but whenever this little fluke of a problem rears its ugly head, one or more entries will be down below where the Past Items are listed. It will still be set to Always Show, but none of them in the Past Items list DO show in the tray. I don't know if I'll ever find the solution to this one and I know it's been talked about in The Lounge before. The red box in my screenshot is my Palm Sync and it should NOT be down there with the @#$%^& Past Items. Ggggrrrrrrr...

I think for something like that (where the actual device is disconnected) Windows moves it to the past items list by default.

Re: Pesky Tray (XP MCE SP2)

Nope, sorry, not true in this case. The cradle IS the device and is connected. The tray icon I'm speaking of is a software element, in a way un-related to the cradle. I know I'm not saying that correctly, but believe me, I've had this Palm for several years and that icon SHOULD be in the tray and may very well be back tomorrow...

Re: Pesky Tray (XP MCE SP2)

Sorry, I meant to add this to the last post. Back about 18 months ago, <!profile=TonyE>TonyE<!/profile> recommended a few articles of reading here: <post:=490,788>post 490,788</post:> and I'm in the process of re-acquainting myself with those old stories. Interestingly, one premise is that the problem comes when you have NO icons set for "hiding," so I think I'm gonna set at least one of mine to always hide and see if that makes a difference. I need to find a junk icon that I don't need to see. More later...

Re: Pesky Tray (XP MCE SP2)

I know, you're getting a lot of email on my account, eh Doc? Sorry!

Well, that was a quick and painless test. I went back to the customize screen and set one of my TSRs to "always hide." It's the alarm manager for the desktop calendar program I use, coincidentally a Palm program, but having nothing to do with the rest of this story. It just happens to be a tray icon I can't avoid BECAUSE I use the alarm feature of my desktop calendar program. Anyway, I set it to always hide and re-booted to discover the Palm Sync program showing up again (see attachment). Interestingly, the article Tony recommended ( Systray Icons Missing ) gets pretty radical in its depth, but the gist of it seems to be that this is a problem Microsoft has ignored. Also note that this article recommends un-checking the Hide Icons box, just as Dave did.

Just another one of Microsoft's "features" that's not ready for prime time, but they included it anyway.
