Batch Files and Excel 97 (XP Pro SP2)

    Hello,

Can please anyone tell me about how to open a specific excel 97 file from within a batch file without pausing the batch file? I've tried:

    "F:Excel filesTO DO today.xls"

    and

    call "F:Excel filesTO DO today.xls"

the batch file pauses until I close the excel file. One thing that sort of works is if I create a shortcut to the excel file and then put that into the batch file. I write sort of because it seems as if excel is taking longer to open using this method. Also this seems a roundabout method. If anyone knows of a better method I'd like to hear it.

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

Does <big>START "" "F:Excel filesTO DO today.xls"</big> do what you want?

See the help info in START /?

    Thanks John, it does!

Actually I had tried using start but like this:

    START "F:Excel filesTO DO today.xls" /b

I'd missed out the double double quotes at the beginning. The result was that the other files in my batch file opened but the excel file was skipped and because of the /b I was also left with a command prompt window. I guess I shouldn't try writing batch files past one in the morning!

    Thanks again,

    Chris

It is a notorious 'feature' that you have to specify a title, even when null, in
    START ["title"] [/Dpath] [/i] [/MIN] [/MAX] [/SEPARATE | /SHARED]
    [/LOW | /NORMAL | /HIGH | /REALTIME | /ABOVENORMAL | /BELOWNORMAL]
    [/WAIT] [/b] [command/program]
    [parameters]
