    Folder Icons in Bookmarks Toolbar Folder (Firefox 2.0.0.1)

    Hello,

    Does anyone know of a way to set icons for folders in the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder? I like collecting links into folders as I can get quick access to more links but I'd also like a visual aid as to which folder is which. Moreover a toolbar full of folders is kind of boring to look at!

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

    Hi Chris

    I would say no there isn't, unless there is a fancy add-in gizmo out there. The icons are the favicons created via the website you visit hence why Lex <img src=/S/lex.gif border=0 alt=lex width=16 height=16> appears in your Bookmarks

    It seems to me that I did see either an extension or a custom mod that one could do (kinda like a skin) to change the Fx bookmark folder icons. But what I remember was that you could change ALL the yellow folders to something else, NOT use a custom one for each folder. I haven't found it again in a quick search though...

    I found what I guess is confirmation of my recollection here: Webuser Forums: Firefox - Bookmark folder icons and one of the illustrated themes ( Noia 2.0 (eXtreme) Previews & Screenshots | Firefox Add-ons | Mozilla Corporation ) is one of the ones I tried.

    Thanks for the replies,

    Out of curiosity, I just put a post on the Mozilla FireFox Support forum and got a reply in around a minute! Not only that but the reply led to a solution that worked! Have a look at the thread:

    http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.ph...1941214#1941214

    The answer is to create a custom css rule. I found it a little tricky at first as it's important to check the direction of the slashes in the address path, but it does the job. Now I just need to find the icons I want to use.

    Best wishes,

    Chris

    Good find, Chris! T'would be nice to keep us posted on how you make out, 'cause I'll be next in line to try it. A don't like all those little yellow ones either!

    Nice one Chris, I stand corrected but how do you propose to do it for each different folder, I see this will only work for all folder icons as it is a css styling <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    While we're waiting for a report from Chris, Jerry, note that the post he mentioned says this:
    <hr>Repeat this code throughtout userChrome.css for each folder you want a favicon for.<hr>
    Being the tinkerer that I am, I can't stand the suspense, so I'm giving it a try as we speak.

    Re: Folder Icons in Bookmarks Toolbar Folder (Fire

    Hi again,

    It does work for different folders, but you need a unique name for each folder which in the CSS code is referred to a label: eg

    [label="Woody's"]

    It's not perfect, especially if one decies to change an icon. On my machine sometimes the old one refuses to go away. I've found the best solution is to completey remove the code for that folder so that it reverts back to the Firefox default and then add the code back and then edit it. Just editing the path to the ico file doesn't always work.

    Incidentally, If I wanted to use the Lounge Lizard Icon for my Woody's Folder Group would that be OK and how would I go about getting it, or is there an online source to point to?

    Anyway, being on Japan time it's time for a morning coffee!

    All the best,

    Chris

    PS So far I've changed four folders, another dozen or so to go!

    I stand corrected, I hadn't taken on board the labels aspect. I posted <!post=Online favicon generator,595040>Online favicon generator<!/post> a little while ago which will allow you to create 16 x 16 pixel ico files of your own. I am sure Al may have tested this.

    It's OK to use Lex; I have attached him in a zip file.

    Thanks Hans, Lex is now sitting proudly on my Bookmarks Toolbar with all his children waiting beneath.

    Thanks for the link, Jerry. So far I'm using a combination of CorelDraw 12 and irfanview to make icons. I just tried the onlinefavicon generator you mentioned but got a server error. May try again, later. It's not easy to make an icon I would actually want to use!

    All the best,

    Chris

    Re: Folder Icons in Bookmarks Toolbar Folder (Fire

    As I said above Chris, I too started giving it a try yesterday afternoon. I've also done just a few folders while I figure out what possible impact this may have. For the benefit of future searching Loungers and just in case your referenced link were to go away, I'll post the code I've entered so far in my userchrome.css file at the end of this post. One should note that the pixel size of the icons in your code IS relevent as you see that the ones I tried are 32 x 32 and nothing showed up until I changed the original 16 x 16 that was in the link you referenced. The unusual view presented when you click on Bookmarks on the command line is shown in the bottom of my graphic attachment. The personal toolbar seems to know how to shrink the icon from 32x32 but the command line command keeps the larger size. It's all very nice however and I say thanks again for finding the solution. Some code:
    <hr>.bookmark-item[container="true"][label="Banks"] {
    list-style-image: url('file://C:/Utilities/Icons/checkmrk.ico') !important;
    -moz-image-region: rect(0px 32px 32px 0px) !important;
    }

    .bookmark-item[container="true"][label="Internet"] {
    list-style-image: url('file://C:/Utilities/Icons/computer.ico') !important;
    -moz-image-region: rect(0px 32px 32px 0px) !important;
    }

    .bookmark-item[container="true"][label="Google"] {
    list-style-image: url('file://C:/Utilities/Icons/bullseye.ico') !important;
    -moz-image-region: rect(0px 32px 32px 0px) !important;
    }

    .bookmark-item[container="true"][label="Shopping"] {
    list-style-image: url('file://C:/Utilities/Icons/logo.ico') !important;
    -moz-image-region: rect(0px 32px 32px 0px) !important;
    }<hr>

    This morning I used Irfanview to resize my test icons to 16 x 16, changed the code above, and the command line bookmarks now look like they're supposed to.
