    Spyware In Virus Out

    Hi

Anti virus programmes stop virus's getting on your computer,? Spyware programmes only remove it after is has been transferred to your computer?.

On the assumption that I am correct, what use is Spyware if you visit a site it is installed does it's dirty work, then you run Spyware removal, is it too late?

I use Windows Defender, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Zone Alarm Spyware, Paranoid or what <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Several anti-spyware applications have both a scan function that checks for damage after the fact *and* a realtime protection that tries to prevent infection. See for example the screenshot from Windows Defender below.

I strongly recommend SpywareBlaster from javacoolsoftware. It doesn't have a scan function and it doesn't run in the background. It simply adds thousands of malware apllications to the list of blocked sites in the registry, effectively disabling them. Just keep it updated regularly.

    Hi Hans

Thanks for the reply, I already had the tick box checked as in your screenshot, but stuff still seems to get through, As for your second post, I will download SpywareBlaster and try it out.

    Thanks again

Different spyware/adware use different means to get installed. Increasing your browser security to limit the privileges you grant to strange web sites is another way to reduce installations.

If you list particular problem software, perhaps you could get some more specific suggestions.

Finally, if you share this computer with others, well...

No. Antivirus programmes (usually) try to stop viruses getting onto your computer and remove them when they find them. AV software should be able to remove existing viruses on your computer too.

Spyware programmes scan your computer for spyware (and some, as Hans pointed out, include a live scan too). Spyware is often carried as a payload of a virus, but viruses and spyware are not the same thing.
