Uninstall NAV 2006

Here I sit on my laptop in colmplete frustration. This first surfaced when Mrs J asked why she couldn't get onto GMail via her XP account on the family PC. I went up to investigate thinking that a recent update had locked down the parental control. I logged into my account and immediately noted that the Norton Internet Security pop up thingy was not opening but it was running in the Task Manager, I was unable to stop it.

Going to the Norton Help and Support website I went through the routine wher you can download a diagnostic tool. It did its thing and informed me that there were corrupt registry entries and they could be repaired....I did the instructions, changed msconfig to boot.ini etc and it went swimmingly until it stated that I had to uninstall, this is where the problem arose. It wanted me to log into the Internet Security panel and sign out as supervisor. I could not do this as this was the problem in the first case and just showed me a Norton IS window which was devoid of buttons or text.

I tried to go back to a restoration point, no help...no help on Norton...have you got any ideas?

Does Add or Remove Program do anything for you?

Otherwise it might be a brute-force delete of all directories, files and startup entries, and/or the use of the Norton Removal Tool to scrub all registry entries. Then a reinstall, if you feel strong...!

    Best of luck!

    Good luck, Jerry.

I finally gave up on Norton all together and got rid of Systemworks and AV and all the others in the Norton package. Too bad because Peter Norton had a good thing going until his Norton Utilities grew and grew into the many headed monster is is today.

    Thanks Bob

I can happily say that John's little fix worked and Mrs J is happily chatting on email upstairs. I only have about 10 weeks left on the licence so I will definitely have a rethink as this has been a real pain.

I couple of the techy desktop guys at work have had similar thoughts as yours and Dave's. I imagine that is probably why Norton brought out this shredder app that John eludes to and I used as I remember a while back the registry was absolutely littered with the app. I am happy for the moment

    Jerry,

When your subscription expires, you might want to look into Spy Sweeper with AV as a replacement for Norton. I've never had any experience with it, but since Spy Sweeper is such a well touted product (I use it myself) I'd suspect that they have a pretty fair AV program as well. If I didn't have 8 months left on my subscription with Norton, I'd switch now (they are offering a $10 upgrade to the +AV for the duration of your Spy Sweeper subscription).

Just as a footnote, Webroot is using techology from Sophos, a U.K.-based antivirus company that hasn't previously gone after the individual user/home market. It will be interesting to see how the integrated product is received in the marketplace.

    Re: Uninstall NAV 2006

As my Norton subscription was coming to an end several weeks ago, I seriously considered dumping it even though I haven't had any problems to speak of, other than a slowdown in system resources. After much going back and forth, and reading everything I could find, I decided to upgrade to Internet Security 2007. After uninstalling IS 2005 and using the Norton removal tool, my installation went without a problem. Since then, I've been pleased, especially since 2007 doesn't hog resources as earlier versions do. 2007 is very much in the background and seems to be doing its job. Zone Alarm isn't compatible though, so I had to uninstall that. Frankly, I wasn't sorry to do so since ZA, at least in my experience, needs "training" again and again, particularly a problem when my spouse is using the PC and doesn't know whether access to the Internet should be allowed or denied.

HEY !!! Finally someone besides me who doesn't have a major gripe with Norton.

I have been running NIS 2007 on 4 machines for the past few months and I'm quite satisfied. It certainly does not slow down the system as did previous Norton products. As you mentioned, NIS (at least to date) has made all of the firewall "decisions" without any intervention on my part - a pleasant contrast to Zone Alarm. Now having actually expressed satisfaction with a Symantec product, I'm waiting for the deluge from the naysayers .

    Re: Uninstall NAV 2006

To tell you the truth , I have no problems with NAV. The only thing that bugs me is the length of time I have to wait each time I open Word or Excel each while it scans...

I got home tonight and got grumbled at that "We can't get on the internet gggrrr" I went up, changed the parental controls and hey presto, they were on, it was just to late last night to put it back to "as was" and they have all their favourite sites etc that it just has to be done, like any other application that corrupts or fails.

Each application has it quirks and each does the job. In the 7 years I have had a computer, I have only had one virus...not bad really.

I agree Jezza - everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I've been with Norton as long as I can remember, and while earlier versions might have been resource hogs, the 2007 version of NIS exhibits none of this behaviour. Even in previous versions, I couldn't discern any noticeable slowness directly attributable to Norton. I have been virus free to date, and that is what matters to me. I'm sure that other products offer this same level of protection, but (in my opinion) why switch if the current product is working?

I am also a happy user of Symantec products. I've had a fair share of problems, but all software products have problems, and I've never had a virus.
