Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

Great! Now when are they going to update their maps? It still shows my place from over a year ago!
    Thanks John

    Re: Google Earth

Amen to that! Not only are so many of the maps WAY old and outdated, but you add the anomolies like in this attachment and it makes Google's maps pretty useless for some things. This happens to be a route I travel every day, but it's pervasive in lots of places around the world. I have no knowledge of where the maps or satellite pix come from, but I sure wish they'd get a little more up to date and clearer in their shots.

    Re: Google Earth

What I find even more interesting is this: Back a few months ago, I was testing a personal tracking device before I sent it out to any of my dealers for further evaluation. When I went to the ASP site to see the location of the device I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were using Microsoft Maps. I zoomed in and saw the device was located right where it was supposed to be but also noticed that their satellite map also showed some things that had recently changed around my place. I went onto Google Maps and saw that those changes were not on theirs. To make a long story short, I now have the device back at my place and am looking at it on the ASP site and see that the Microsoft map now looks exactly like Googles' does. I was under the impression that they were using different services. Too odd for me.
    Thanks John

    Re: Google Earth

MS Live Local sometimes has better high res maps in monochrome, such as my favorite remote campsite:

    Re: Google Earth

    Hi John

Extremely fast but the images of my log cabin are about 9 months out of date as Google Earth has images from the summer when we cropped a few of our trees in the log cabin garden.

I know that the companies still update on a rolling programme and my mother and father's house is updated in Live Search and not in Google Earth. I think a mixture of the two is in order....but still it is amazingly fast compared to Goole Earth <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

    Re: Google Earth

In my case the GoogE sat photo of my house is more recent than the LL, but much lower res. (A near neighbor ripped out four mature pine trees, so it was easy to tell. His utility bills are telling him it was a bad idea.)

    Re: Google Earth

You all might want to take a look at Flash Earth which compares eight different online mapping services - Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, NASA, and OpenLayers. The well-designed interface allows you to easily switch between services such that you can sample each one's particular representation of satellite and aerial imagery.

    Re: Google Earth

That's a handy site, but for where I live, Google Maps/Google Earth is the only service providing detailed images.

    Re: Google Earth

That IS a fabulous link, Don and I thank you much for posting it. I'm going to continue playing around with it as I'm sure will other Loungers. I'm sure everyone will have their favorite homesite or other location to test it with, but here's my example. If you put in an address of: <big>100 veterans drive, wilmore, ky</big> which is the nursing home where my wife lives and the intended location of my rather blurred post from up above, it's amazing the comparisons that result. Here's just one example.

    Re: Google Earth

You've zoomed in too far. If you zoom out (using the mouse wheel, for example), you should see something in the others too.
