Nero 7.5.9.0

I've been a Nero user for some time and last Spring when I bought this new computer, I upgraded from version 6 to version 7-something. Since my 7-something is almost 9 months old, I decided to check for updates. Sure enough, there sits 7.5.9.0 so of course I proceed to the download (free update) link here: Nero 7 Ultra Edition. The download page clearly says English, but when I ran the installer all the screens were in German. Fortunately, I can read enough to know where to click and did manage to get through OK. Although all the screens of the installed programs were still in German (Nero Home, Nero Start Smart) I ended up in the attached setup window, where once again English is the only language selected. However, when I clicked on OK, I got a request in German to reboot the computer. After the reboot "most" of the menus and GUIs are now in English. Just thought I'd mention this little oddity in case others run into it, or maybe someone knows what I did wrong on the download.

BTW, I don't know how, but the installed update DID automatically pick up my license key and name, so all I had to enter was "occupation" (retired, of course!)

You just need to remember to download the files that have "Eng" in their name. FYI, you will need to download all new help files as they were not included in the update as of January 2nd. Simply download and copy into the correct folder to replace what is currently there.

Yep, been there and done that. See attachment, also for Help files with the "Eng" in the name, but that requires another attachment.

Re: Nero 7.5.9.0

Curiosity being what it is, I noticed the update file name difference in your graphic, compared to what the download page gave me (my previous download attachment). Just for the heck of it, I went directly to the FTP link shown in my attachment and drilled my way down to the directory where the Nero update software seems to be located - see this current attachment. There are the EXE files that I downloaded as well as the file name from your attachment. They are the ONLY two files in that directory with the "Eng" in the file name. Now I'm wondering if the download page directed me to the wrong file, since I haven't yet discerned what the "no_atb" means. I've downloaded that file and I'm gonna give it a kick-start later today to see if the installer menus start out in German. More later, maybe...

Edited to add: I should have pointed out that it seems every time you navigate to the free update link on the Nero page, and select to download, it points to a different FTP directory, first it was FTP1, then FTP2 and just now it led to FTP3. But each FTP directory seems to have the same two files. Hmmmmm.....

"No atb" means that the Ask.com ToolBar (one of those annoying browser add-ins) is not included in the download.

Re: Nero 7.5.9.0

Here's the skinny as best I can see it so far. When I first downloaded the update, I had UN-CHECKED the Ask thingie, so I was surprised to see that, in German, I got asked on installation if I wanted to install the Ask Toolbar. Now I know: see the current attachment. Even though I had un-checked it, and the screen indicates the correct file, look at what was actually getting downloaded! I repeated it all again, just to make sure and when I start the install from the file without the "no_atb" it still does start in German. On the other hand, I did a test run of the file that HAS the "no_atb" in its name and it starts in English. I let it go through several screens just to be sure, up to the point where my license comes up. Then I cancelled. This may all be worth nothing to anyone, but there ya have it.

BTW, I was going to post something in the Nero forums but that doesn't look too easy to do. All I can find is a tech support request entry that insists I run some analytical software to prepare info for them, and right now, I'm not willing to do that just to pass along some info or a simple question!

Any reason why you stopped the installation? Is it because you want to practice your German?

Only because I didn't see the need to let it finish, since I've already worked around the language thing on my already installed copy.

Re: Nero 7.5.9.0

Hi Al,

One thing that I have found with Nero's Ultra Enhanced v7 is that it tries to be all things to everybody (as did previous versions). For example, establishing itself as the default audio player, or video player. This might be fine if the end user has no other application to provide these features. However, if you do like some other application then those add-ons in Nero end up adding bloat... IMHO.

In my experience, when you update to a more current version, Nero will more than likely just install everything. Notwithstanding that it does have a feature that will allow you to select only the components that you do want and bypass those that you decide you do not want.

I have found, for my personal preference, that when an update is available, I first uninstall the previous version. Then when installing the new version, the feature to selectively add only those desired components becomes available. Then I can cherry-pick ignoring things like Nero Scout (a resource hog IMHO), the audio player, the video player and anything else that I think is redundant. Oh yes, I also make sure that I bypass InCD as I have also found problems with this one lurking in the background. To the best of my knowledge InCD is for working with RW media... which I do not use, and therefore feel that I can bypass its use.

When asked by the install process if I want Nero to be the default of all various features, I bypass all items. With this approach I have found that less bloat is installed and I have fewer, if any problems and conflicts.

Anyway, just my Cdn and maybe this might help you if and when you decide to update to the recently released version.

Cheers, Bob
Regards,
Bob

Re: Nero 7.5.9.0

Bob,

And my Cdn I agree about the "bloat".... I mean give me a break . . . 195 megs?? But I have had success in installing the updates over the top of existing versions and my previous selections of which programs/features to install have been retained from the previous install. Of course, with this currently released version, you have to remember to UNcheck the item to install the silly Toolbar. Otherwise, everything works as expected. YMMV.
