    Mail to WEE bounced

Not sure if this belongs here, but just wondering why an email I sent to talkemail@office-watch.com was bounced. The error message was:

    - These recipients of your message have been processed by the mail server:
talkemail@office-watch.com; Failed; 5.5.0 (other or undefined protocol status)

Remote MTA mx2.dundee.net: SMTP diagnostic: 554 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [64.97.136.188]

I've not come across this "cannot find your hostname" before. This email had been sent from a sizeable UK ISP, via their mail server, with no added tricks, so not sure what's going on.

    Re: Mail to WEE bounced

    Mark,

550 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname
    THE PROBLEM:

The mail server - source IP address which is trying to send mail to does not have proper reverse DNS entries setup or the DNS server for that mail server was not functioning at the exact instant that the mail was trying to be delivered. In other words the IP address from which the mail is being sent could not be converted back to a host name. The owner of that mail server and their ISP needs to correct this issue in order for mail to flow properly.

    HOW TO GET THIS FIXED:

The ISP who provides the reverse-DNS mappings for the mail server in question needs to setup a reverse DNS mapping for the IP address of that mail server so that other hosts on the internet that try and convert that IP number back to a hostname will get a result. This is usually only a few minutes of work.

To find out who you need to contact for a given IP address you can visit the American Registery of Internet Numbers (ARIN) "whois" site at WHOIS and enter the IP address which was rejected in the "Search for:" dialog. The contact information for the party in charge of that IP space should then be displayed for you.

That party can then be called or emailed and a request to setup a valid reverse-dns (PTR) record for the IP address of the mail server can be made.

BTW, I just pinged the office-watch.com site and it seemed to respond OK.
Are you still getting the error message?

    Re: Mail to WEE bounced

Interesting. That was how I read the error, but I've never received that error message before, ever. Is there something unique about the dundee mailservers that checks the sending server's name, or is this an odd wrinkle in the usual system?

Just tried to resend, and get the same error. Even more bizarrely, the host that's reported in the error message belongs to Tucows, and my ISP is Virgin, in the UK. All very odd.

I don't know if it's anything unique in the servers but it may be to some changes they may have recently made to their system.
I would contact your ISP to see if they can resolve this for you, as the first post suggests.

Tried sending via a different account (hotmail), and also undeliverable. Error messages not so helpful this time - just 4.4.7 delivery time expired. Still haven't heard back from my ISP.

    Bug your ISP again.
Don't let them try to sweep this under the rug. Persist!
