    You can use:
    <code>=if(len(X3)=0,0,whatever)</code>

    Or if you want to test for an actually empty cell, you can use:
    <code>=IF(ISBLANK(X3),0,something else)</code>

    =ISNUMBER(cell)*1 may also work, depending on what you want to do if there's text in there. In the Excel Help, look for "IS Functions".
