    special characters (XP SR3)

Something funny has happened to my special characters. In particular, I had a file that had arrow characters in it, which reproduced them all as small caps R surrounded by a circle. I wanted to send these to my students. II simply deleted all these characters, except one by accident. But I discovered that the students received that, showing an arrow. I'm also getting weird characters where there should be bullet points--I'd just like one default setting for bullet points that I could vary, perhaps, in special cases, but which always returned when I was starting a new document. Can anyone guess what might have happened to my system.

Hard to say without seeing the document. Have you installed or uninstalled any fonts recently?

thanks. I can upload the bullet point example. I want straightforward circular bullet points. As far as I can see in Bullets and Numbering this is what I have--and I'm not working with new fonts. But what I get on the screen is as in the JPEG attached.

I see a circular dot as bullet. When I select Format Bullets and Numbering > Customize > Font, the font for the bullet is Symbol. What happens if you select some text in Word and change the font to Symbol? Do you see Greek characters? If not, there may be a problem with Symbol on your PC.

thanks so much. The problem was that Symbol had somehow become uninstalled. Putting it back in gets everything right again.

I don't know what I'd do without you

    many thanks
