Acronis TI 10 multiple problems

I need to preface this post by saying I have never been one of those Lounge-ites who love TI, I have always had problems with every version I've had (7, 8, and now 10) and cringe anytime I have to restore an image fearing that no matter how many validations have been successful it often still fails.

Having said that, I was stupid last night and upgraded from TI 8 toTI 10 and now nothing works! I can't remove/resize/ the secure zone, I can't validate an image made by TI 8, I can't even make a new image from TI 10 (even after setting the backup location), I can't explore a TI 8 image, etc. etc. I get no error messages at all (not that those are too helpful). Nothing has changed on this PC, it's the same one that worked with TI 8. Rebooting and restarting doesn't make a difference. This is so crazy I have to laugh.

I went to the Acronis forums but the after seeing so many posts that are never answered by tech support, I didn't want to waste my time adding to the pile of unopened mail. I did send tech support an email but I don't expect much in a reply since my problems are large and without any messages to report.

How can I go back to version 8? Fortunately I do still have the .exe from TI 7, and 8 + the upgrades. Maybe I'll uninstall vers10 and run the older .exe and see what happens.

Re: Acronis TI 10 multiple problems

Uninstall TI 10 completely and REINSTALL TI 10 .

That includes deleting all of the Acronis files and folders. Do a search for "Acronis" and note any locations found.
I think you have so many left over bits and pieces from older versions, leading to mass confusion within your system.

Re: Acronis TI 10 multiple problems

Thanks for the glimmer of hope but it still fails to do anything. I uninstalled, rebooted, deleted all Acronis folders found anywhere, rebooted and reinstalled it. (I did not do a registry search, however.)

I just now again tried to remove the secure zone created from TI 8 and it failed with a runtime error on TrueImageNotify.exe "abnormal program termination." After that I tried a simple backup of a one small data directory. That too failed but no error was given, it just did nothing after I hit the Proceed button.

Between all the downloads, reinstalls, reboots, etc. I've wasted too many hours of my Sunday. I'll uninstall it again and go back to TI 8, I don't want to waste another day on this. Thanks anyway.

Well, good luck to you.
I still think you have too much debris around and a reg search might be one way to dump it.
It seems to me there was a tool available from Acronis to clean out the remnants of old versions but I'll have to look for it.
Will post if I find more details.

All is back to 'normal' now that I reinstalled TI version 8. I won't venture away from that version again. I don't want to spend a day tricking it into working.

Thanks again,

Win XP Pro Version 2002, SP 2

TI version 8 works fine but version 10 does absolutely nothing, it's crazy that there is such a difference. I've since re-installed TI 8 and all is ok again.

I do not recall there being a removal tool for TI, but detailed removal instructions were posted in the TI forum

No, I didn't mean a removal bar but a separate utility program to do the job.

It may have been that site you mentioned but I just don't recall the details, since I have never had to do a uninstall of TI.

Re: Acronis TI 10 multiple problems

Hello, I quite liked version 8, though I'm using version 9 now. Is there any advantage of using the Secure Zone? I keep my backups on a separate partition and also a separate physical hard drive.

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Re: Acronis TI 10 multiple problems

Take it from one who would be scared to try it. The secure zone (I think) was intended not only to "protect" backups but to allow those protected backups to reside on the same local disk. The manual says the secure zone can reside on any local disk but you can only have one. My feeling has always been: what if the disk dies? No disk, no secure zone! If I'm going to put my backups on a separate disk (which I do) why not dedicate that disk to backups and nothing else. As you may have seen in other posts, these days I use two alternating external USB drives to backup (image) to and I think some others have even more than two.

Re: Acronis TI 10 multiple problems

I guess the answer depends on who you're asking (TI or their customers). After 20+ years of owning computers, I've never had drive fail due to physical problems (is that luck or what *ha*). The secure zone is a hidden area (hidden from Windows) on your hard drive that TI can use as a backup location. I also keep backups on an external USB drive so do not solely rely on that. It just makes it easier to recover but since I've never had to use it, I don't know how well it works. On the other hand, I've had validated TI images fail to restore too so my faith in any of this stuff working has always been low.

BTW. TI just replied to my email suggesting I uninstall TI 10 and run some cleaning program they referred me to. Then re-install it. If I have a spare 2 hours I may try it.

Can you provide a link to the "Cleaning Program"?

Yes here it is. I should of included it in my other post

Windows installer cleanup utility (referenced by TI in their reply to my problem post):

Deb,
>>>suggesting I uninstall TI 10 and run some cleaning program they referred me to. Then re-install it

After I get done patting myself on the back, it seems that's about what I suggested in my two posts.
Seriously, I think you just have to clean out the remnants of any old versions of TI.
