template not opening from startup (2002 and 2003)

I created a template, then moved it from the traditional template folder to the Word startup folder. The path is correctly set in Word's "file locations"...however, when I open Word, while the template apparently opens (in the Startup folder I see the funny characters in front of the name of the template suggesting it's open), the header, footer, and some boiler-plate text do not open in the document. Hmm. What have I done incorrectly here?

A template placed in Word's Startup folder acts as an add-in aka global template. Such templates should be used to provide globally available macros, not as basis for new documents.
Documents places in Word's Startup folder will be opened.

If you want to set the default text, header, footer etc that will appear when you start word, then you can edit Normal.dot to include these.
