    TOC Headings (Word 2000)

    Hi:

Is there a way to generate a TOC using the Heading styles and NOT include a page number for a particular Heading yet include a page number for the others? I'd even opt for using {TC} entries.

I'd like it to look like this when it generates:

    INTRODUCTION

    A. The Bad Guys Did This.............................2

    B. This is Who the Bad Guys Are.................4

    ARGUMENT

    A. This is Why We Want Their Money..........5

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Hi Bobby,

Here's one way to do it (illustrated in attached file) - this relies on a devious trick (so the attorneys should love it <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>):

For this sample, I've assigned Heading1 to the styles that I don't want the page number to appear for, and Heading2 for those styles I do want the page number to appear for.

This means that TOC1 style will automatically be assigned to the Heading1 content in the TOC, and TOC2 style will be automatically assigned to the Heading2 content in the TOC.

Before generating the TOC, go to Format>Style, and modify the definition of the TOC1 style by adding a tab at 9 or 10 inches (something that will be sure to be way past the right margin of the page). This way, the page number will actually be added to the TOC, but it will not be visible either onscreen or on the printed page.

In order for this effect to work though, you need to set the TOC leader dot style to none when you create the TOC; otherwise you'll have leader dots going off into nowhere.

    Hi again,

A little further refinement: if you define tabs into the style definition for TOC2, you can have the leader dots too - see attached sample.

Yes. In your TOC code (where the table appears) add the following: n "1-1"

One of the best places I've found for learning about field switches is directly in Word's Insert / Field dialog. When you select the field, click on options... it tells you each (generally) switch that applies to that specific field -- as you move up and down through the various items in the box a description appears below it. This one I'm familiar with because we use it extensively.

    hey Karen,
That works in '97 like a charm too... and you don't have to fool around with leaders and tab marks... GREAT tip!!
    have fun
