HD only boots with bootable CD in drive (XPsp2 & 2003)

    Here's a weird one..

I have PC with an IDE disk, one partition XP, one partition server 2003. After I tried to upgrade the CD to a DVD rom drive, the HD refused to boot windows. It's connected properly, BIOS recognizes and is setup to expect to boot from it.

The hard drive will only boot with a bootable in the CD-Rom drive. It doesn't matter if it's a W2003, WinXp, or even Suse Linux, as long as there is some kind of bootable CD in there, the machine will be able to start the OS on the Hard drive.

I've tried booting to the Recovery Console and trying a FIXBOOT and a FIXMBR, but no joy. Reset the BIOS to default, tried different CD drives. No change in behavior.

This is very strange, I can't say I've ever seen anything like this before.

Wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Have you reset the BIOS to boot from the HD first ??

    1) What IDE channels are connected to which device?
    2) Does the system start without an optical drive installed?
    3) What are your jumpers set to do - Cable Select, Master/Slave?
    4) What, if any messages, are displayed when the system fails to boot to Hard Drive 0?

    1. HD is IDE0 master, CD is IDE1 Master
    2. No
    3. Master on both devices
    4. After trying CD, HD and then NIC boot, the message is "Invalid boot device, replace and press any key " (from memory, may not be exact).

What you need to do is eliminate possibilities. A couple of suggestions:

If you haven't already, try different IDE cables.

Check your power supply's output, or try a different one.

Try another hard drive (if you have or have access to one), see if it works.[/list]My gut tells me that if it's not one of the above, your onboard IDE controller is shot. A $20 add-in PCI controller card might solve the issue as well.

And just for curiosity sake, when you can get to the hard drive via that convoluted method, what does the BOOT.INI file look like? Is it possible that it got corrupted when you installed the DVD drive? Just a thought...

Once you have it booted up, have you checked the Boot.ini file to see where that is looking to boot from? Also, have you tried defragmenting the drive just to make sure that none of the boot files has moved past the bootable area? (happened to one of my servers once when a defrag got interrupted and I had to boot it from a floppy for 2 weeks until I finally figured it out)

Rewrote the boot.ini file, although it seemed the look OK from the text editor.

Tried booting from the secondary IDE controller and with a different cable. No Joy. Looks to be something with the drive itself.

Unfortunately, my fiddling has set me even further back, and I cannot boot from the CD or HD now.

Since it's a production server, I am now going to drop back 10 yards and punt. The current HD is not up to reliability standards, so I will start again with a reinstall on a new hard drive.
