    NIS 2007 & Spybot S&D 1.3

I've just (today) upgraded my NIS from 2004 to 2007. I also had Windows Defender real-time protection and Spybot 1.3 Resident running on my system. Prior to upgrading to 2007 I closed Resident and closed the Defender real-time protection facility.
On running the 2007 installation it told me that Spybot 1.3 was 'incompatible' with NIS 2007 and that I'd have to remove the programme from my system prior to proceeding. I did this and, apart from a few hiccups, NIS installation went okay. I've since turned Defender real-time protection back on without problem but would really like to know just why NIS thinks I cannot have the Spybot programme on my computer. Does/has anyone had similar issues/problems (assuming of course that I'm not the only one who uses NIS!).
Could it be that although I turned Resident off prior to installation NIS 'saw' it as being on real-time and thus likely to cause a problem? I'd like to put S&D back on my computer (1.4 I suppose) but don't want to screw up NIS in the process.
    Comments appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Keith

See this item on the Spybot website.

I don't know whether it's a good idea to run multiple real-time anti-spyware apps. Even if they don't conflict, it might have a negative impact on performance. (I'm not talking about the scans you run with Spybot - I think it's a good idea to run regular scans with more than one anti-spyware app).

    Hans,
As ever, Thank you! Useful article that explains much. Take your point about running multiple real-time apps and had been on the 'brink' of turning off Resident anyway (Windows blurb indicates that Defender doesn't cause conflicts with other apps, so intend leaving that one on). Having read the Spybot article I intend downloading version 1.4 and use it on a regular, rather than real-time, basis. I'll post back if I get any 'conflict' issues!!
    Again, Thanks,
    Keith

    Re: NIS 2007 & Spybot S&D 1.3

    Hans,
Just to update - I re-installed Spybot (1.4 this time) on my system last week without any bother from NIS 2007. I've even had Resident and Teatimer running without NIS saying/doing anything, even during its full scans! (I haven't forgotten your point re multiple real-time).

Interesting that Norton will not allow you to load its products on your computer when Spybot is present, but doesn't show any adverse effects (as far as I can tell) when it's installed thereafter!

One thing I have noted though (thanks to Spybot which picked it up) - it would appear that NIS has turned off my Windows Security Centre. I don't have automatic downloads set, so I'm not that worried - it's just that I hadn't realised the SC was off!!
    Cheers,
    Keith

    Keith,
I think most suites like NIS will automatically turn of the Windows Firewall when installed. You should be able to reenable automatic updates without the Windows firewall though.

    Re: NIS 2007 & Spybot S&D 1.3

    Bob,
Interestingly though, it is the whole Windows Security Centre that's been turned off (via a registry change, I think) by NIS, not just the Firewall - and, as Windows Firewall only checks incoming, I'm more than happy to stick with Norton on that one!

When I open the Security Centre window now, there's a message at the top that tells me: "Security Centre is currently unavailable because the Security Centre has not been started or was stopped ....."

I hadn't realised it was inactive until Spybot flagged it up during its scan! I previously had NIS 2004, during which time the Security Centre was "active" but just advised me that I was using NIS Firewall and Anti-Virus.

Ah well! NIS is somewhat of a drag on resources but, having just upgraded it, I guess I'm stuck for at least the year - or waste my money! And, as I do my banking/finances on-line, I need a package that is acceptable to my bank, and me, (otherwise they won't cough up if my account is raided etc!!).

    Thanks for the input.

    Kieth,
    Go into Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services.

Scroll down to Security Center and Security Manager. Right click on each one and click properties.
Look at "Startup Type" and click the drop down box to select "Automatic". OK out, then click on "Start" this service in the upper left hand corner and apply.

Do the same for both services and the Security Center should be active again.

    Re: NIS 2007 & Spybot S&D 1.3

    Bob,
Just to square the circle in case anyone else gets similar probs in future! All went well with Windows Security Centre (WSC) running until I turned on my computer today, at which time I noticed that it had, again, been disabled. I started to look at NIS more closely and found a small 'options' underline within the Norton Protection Centre main window - this led me to a option headed "Windows Security Centre Settings", with a tick-box for "show messages from WSC" (its default setting was unticked) - I ticked this, okayed out, and rebooted. Lo and behold, WSC came up without a problem!
NIS default action seems to have been to automatically turn off WSC each time I booted up. We got there in the end. Thanks very much for your time and effort, much appreciated.

    Keith,
    All's well, that ends well.
Guess it's just another reason why I dropped SymantecNorton. Regretfully.
