merge cells in table (pp2003 winxp pro)

I have created a table on a pp slide, 6R and 3C. I was easily able to merge one row of three cells into a singel cell, but want to have the second row contain two cells only. i cant see how to merge into one and then split into two, like I can in Word, or how to convert from three cols to two in just that row. Any help with this would be great.

In a three-cell row, select the first two cells, then click the Merge Cells button. Next, drag the right edge of the merged cell to the desired position.

Or select the three cells, then click the Merge Cells button, and with the merged cell selected, click the Split Cell button.

Best way to merge and split cells exactly how you want them is to use the eraser and pencil tools in the table toolbar to add and delete lines.
