Autohide Taskbar (WinXP Pro SP2)

On my "other" in-home computer, which is my older PIII 600 and hardly ever gets used any more, there seems to be a new problem. Yesterday I discovered that the autohide switch on the taskbar had stopped working. The taskbar stays in view continually. If I enter the properties screen and uncheck the autohide feature, apply it and then reverse the process, turning it back on, immediately after clicking apply and OK, the taskbar returns to its hidden status. BUT, the first time I drag the mouse down to access the taskbar, it STOPS hiding again. Anyone seen or dealt with this behaviour?

I've been to Kelly's corner and there are only two of her tweaks that seem close and one of those is from 1999 and is an "added" utility which I don't know about. I already have a copy of her repair tool (see attached) and there are 21 items in there, so it's gonna take me awhile to see if one of 'em is appropriate.

Other than its overnight virus scan by TrendMicro pcCillin, nothing has been done to the software or hardware for months on end. I suppose that the "silent" updates from TrendMicro could have introduced something, but that's about impossible to check. Ideas and thoughts welcome and thanks.

Re: Autohide Taskbar (WinXP Pro SP2)

Al,
I have seen some newsgroup posts about this - they all seem to relate to having multiple explorer.exe processes running. Supposedly killing all the processes via Task Manager cures the problem - if you look at Tools-Folder options in Explorer, on the View tab is the 'Launch folder windows in a separate process' option checked?

Nope, not checked, but thanks for looking. What's so strange about it is the fact that it hides OK until the first look and then stops hiding. It's a standard (for me) double-high just like always with the QL bar at the left - see cropped attachment.

That sounds like the symptoms described in the posts I saw. Did you check for multiple explorer.exe processes in Task Manager?

You might also try saving this as a batch file and running it to see if it fixes the problem:

taskkill /im:explorer.exe /f
start explorer

HTH

Sorry Rory, my last post WAS a little confusing. When I said "Nope, not checked" I meant that the Views box you suggested looking at was not check-marked (I also looked in Task Manager and only one explorer.exe is running).

Al,
No problem - in fact, reading some more posts, it appears that there don't have to be multiple explorer processes running for this to occur. One poster mentioned that it seemed to occur after coming back from hibernation - I assume he was talking about his computer.

Al,
This is not about your problem but is about the Repair Tool you show in the screenshot.

You mention Kelly's Corner but just where is it?

Since I am a "utility nut"................

Hans,
You are right there as always, thanks.

I DL'd it but I guess I thought it was part of a more extensive "repair tool" for XP.
Always have my eyes open for these things.

Well hang onto it, Bob. You might be able to use it sometime. It has helped me out a few times in the past, sometimes with a little "...Huh? I wonder how it did that?..." but what the heck, it's a freebie. (She says something about a $5 fee to get all the features, but I have never bumped into what that means.)

Re: Autohide Taskbar (WinXP Pro SP2)

And now for the mystery news of the day! I swear folks, the only "drugs" I take are for my blood pressure and cholesterol! This morning, my son came bopping in and wanted to use the computer for a "minute." So I sent him upstairs to use that machine. He ran Firefox, looked up some prices at Wal-Mart and closed the browser. He swears, that's his story and he's sticking by it!

I just now came in and went to start a ritual with Kelly's repair tool, and the blankety-blank task bar is hiding just fine! I dragged it up and let it hide, ran the browser again and the taskbar hid just fine, closed the browser and cruised around the Start Menu, etc. etc. and each step of the way, the taskbar is hiding just like it always has. I know I'll never know what was wrong or how it rectified itself, but there ya have it - another Windows mystery unsolved! Sorry for all the posts...

I've always said Firefox was a great browser! (though I prefer Opera and Seamonkey)
