Media Player / MP4 (Win XP SP2)

I downloaded Windows Media Player hoping that it would allow me to play MP4 video files, but I see that's not the case. Is there a code which I can download that will permit me to play MP4 files?

    Thanks,
    Richard Barrett

Some info here: MSKB 316992: Windows Media Player multimedia file formats and I think you should get some suitable download at free-codecs.com.

I didn't have very good luck. I downloaded the MP4 codec from the MS website (which I found through the KB article), and the MP4 video files still do not play in Windows Media Player. Is WMP simply not able to play MP4 videos? That appears to be the case.

    Thanks.

According to Windows Media Player multimedia file formats,

Windows Media Player does not support the playback of the .mp4 file format. You can play back .mp4 media files in Windows Media Player when you install DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs.

Apple's free QuickTime player can play MP4 files. (Warning: read the page carefully and select only the options you want).
