    Setting Up Port 5226

I cannot figure out how to get my port 5226 set up for LISTENING or ESTABLISHED. The Toolbox software for my HP 2550L Printer will not work without it. I assume that Norton or Windows security has blocked it, but I can't tell.
    Thank you

Whichever firewall you are running needs to allow port 5226 in.

    Re: Setting Up Port 5226

I'm not sure how to configure Norton's Firewall to allow any specific port, but I've turned it completely off and port 5226 still will not come up. The Hp2550L printer requires both port 5225 and 5226 to operate it's Toolbox software. Port 5225 comes up fine, I just can't get port 5226. If Norton is completely disabled, it shouldn't stop port 5226, should it? Anyway, assuming that Norton is not involved, how do I set up the computer to allow port 5226?
    Thank you

If you turn off a third party firewall that has registered itself with Windows XP the XP firewall will take over. You can set XP firewall exceptions by using the Control Panel | Security Center | Windows Firewall applet. There is an Exceptions tab which is pretty much self-explanatory. I don't any experience with the Norton firewall so I can't comment on configuring it.

    Re: Setting Up Port 5226

Well, I completely uninstalled Norton Internet Security and then uninstalled and reinstalled the HP 2550L software and then reinstalled Norton. At every step of the process I checked netstat -na in the Command function just to see when and where things may change. After I reinstalled the printer's software, both the 5225 and 5226 ports were properly configured. I then reinstalled Norton but did not yet run updates. Ports 5225 and 5226 were still O.K. I then ran the updates for Norton, but I did not reboot and at that point I lost port 5226. I went ahead and rebooted and after everything settled down both ports 5225 and 5226 were O.K. again. The bottom line is that Norton does affect the printer software's port configuration although I currently have an operational Toolbox.

Thank you for all your efforts.

Many firewalls will attempt to self-configure on installation. Guess that is what NIS did. Glad you got it working <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Yeah, you guys do know that I'm a tad fickle, don't you? Between Woody's and Amazing Techs I've been able to solve all my computer problems to date. Both sites have a great bunch of guys and gals who are willing to help those less talented. What can I say???
