    XML Editor

    I have just come across this little gem with a non-expiring trial version. I am yet to test it but it does have a limited time for download until 31/1/07

    This is a direct referral via W3C

    Thanks for the link. I followed it but found the following slightly odd:

    <hr>
    Get the Non-Expiring Trial Version Now: Simply purchase a full license. If you are unsatisfied with the product for any reason, you can return it within 7 days for a full refund. And for a limited time you can save big on Stylus Studio. Hurry, The Stylus Studio 2007 XML Enterprise Suite Sale ends Jan 31, 2007 .
    <hr>

    What exactly is the non-expiring trial version? Trial versions often have reduced functions, especially if they don't expire. Not exactly sure what is on offer here, but then I also know less than next to nothing about XML. I guess I should read up about that first.

    Hi Chris

    I have downloaded it and bitten the bullet and here is the email sent to me

    Dear Jezza Bear,
    <hr>
    Thank you for trying Stylus Studio 2007 XML Enterprise Suite, the world's most
    advanced development environment for XML, XML Schema, XSLT, and XQuery.

    To continue your evaluation of Stylus Studio, enter the following key in the
    activation key field of the Register and Activate Stylus Studio dialog box:

    XXXXX-YYYYYY-YYYJW-HGGGG (changed)

    The following resources are available to make your evaluation period as
    productive as possible: blah blah

    <hr>
    I have run a few of my test XML and XSLT files through and all the functionality is there, I think this is a similar thing that I posted to you the other day that is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> just the evaluation never expires and Alan Miller's <post:=623,952>post 623,952</post:> which has these applications free for short periods to get a corner of the market.

    I have gone for, if it fails the functionality test, I will bin it all I have done is provided a throwaway email account...nothing ventured, nothing gained and the very fact that W3C recommended it makes me feel a little happier as they are the guru's

    Thanks Jerry,

    I guess that if it is the same as Giveaway Of the Day then one will lose the software if one is forced to reinstall the system or uses a disc image?

    Yes, I think you are right. I summise that the licence key they have provided has time as its algorithm. I will keep the licence number I was provided with just in case though <img src=/S/sneaky.gif border=0 alt=sneaky width=15 height=15>

    I have been reading about "workarounds" people have been using for that anticipated problem with GiveAwayOfTheDay. I don't believe these breach any licensing, but may not be within the spirit of the offer. I'd also imagine they're rather time-consuming and labour-intensive. Basically, they involve using a program like Total Uninstall to compare snapshots of the system before & after install. Some also suggest comparing installed and after uninstall state. The relevant changes to the registry are identified and the keys exported for use with a future reinstall. Whether all this works, or is worth the sweat is a matter of opinion I guess.

    A very intuitive view. I do like a bit of freeware when it comes out, I check , I test and if it does the job I keep it, if not...to the abyys ye shall go. In my time in the Lounge I have found very useful and also very gaudy freeware items. The Cycle of development is in a transitional point at the moment what with IE7 and Vista showing on the horizon and I reckon a lot of these companies and doing a clearance sale before they push out their new versions.

    <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> some "free" offers clearly don't take account of the labour component required to make them really <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    What about the fields you are required to fill in order to request the activation code? I'll keep a screen capture JPG file of these (already filled in) just in case.
