    Styles in Word (Word 2003)

I use the Styles and Formatting Task Pane often. Problem is; if I only want to change some selected text (e.g. Heading 1) to be Italicized and underlined for one occurrence, Word adds this "new" style to the list in the Task Pane. Is there any way to prevent this because I end up with hundreds of different styles in the list, most of which I only use once and don't want added. Thanks in advance for any info.

You can get rid of those pseudo-styles as follows:
    - Select Tools | Options...
    - Activate the Edit tab.
    - Clear the "Keep track of formatting" check box.
    - Click OK.

Warning: if you don't keep track of formatting, the "Select all" button in the Styles and Formatting task pane will be disabled.
